This specific bike will be a show special. It might show a new direction for them though, the flash bits would be replaced by more production friendly parts on a real one.

They must move with the times though. The Bonneville/Thruxton sells heavily on nostalgia. Replicating the 60's feel for riders who were starting their riding career or waiting to get old enough to ride back in the 60's. As time progresses (sorry) the demographic looking for a slice of history will change to 70's then 80's and so on.

Personally, I have most nostalgia for late 80's and early 90's, (I'm 27) so in the future I'll be looking for remade versions of slingshot GSXR-750s and 1100s, first gen fireblades and glorious Rothmans NSR 250s and Lucky strike RGV250s.

I do like the thrux though, I have one after all. But the major proportion of riders will start looking for a different period style for their bonnevilles in a few years.

Eventually, as history has shown, they'll swap them for CB-750s though...

Sweat,

I understand where you're coming from. And I'm no purist...

I'm just saying we're flooded with naked sport bikes right now. And that Thrux looks just like the rest. Of course, the smart business move would be to build that very bike pictured. Go after the Duc sport classics.

I just wish Triumph would really "go its own way" and give us (and by "us" I'm guessing I just mean "me" ) a 350lb. 500cc single. Or a 500cc twin. Or anything other than what we've already seen on every manufacturers showroom floor. It just disappoints that Hinkley is marching right into line with everyone else.

And I still think it looks like a Guzzi.

Other Motorcycle: right, i wish. . .
in response to the last two posts i'll say this:

1. i never even considered buying a bike until about a year ago and, at 33, i wasn't even born when the bonnie was in it's heyday. i just think it is one of the sharpest bikes out there, it sounds like i think a bike should sound, and it is a member of a very small group that really hits that sweet spot between "sport" and "classic"

2. you can be a purist and get an original bonnie, but, if my bike is going to be my only mode of transport (with the exception of the T. . . sorry the subway/bus) rather than just a weekend warrior, i'll be dam*ed if i'm gonna buy a bike that isn't wholly reliable. i don't have the time or the $$ to trick my bike out but that doesn't mean i should be relegated to ratbike status

My idea, is that Triumph needs to offer a Thruxton Sport, or SS, or GT, or whatever, version with the mags/dual discs, etc to compliment the current version. I love the current version, I love Robnobrakes' bike (it is badass Rob), but I also like the retro-ultramodern red thrux pictured here.

We are walking a fine line here, but I think that red bike nailed it just as good as Kenny Dreer's Norton did. That bike was bonerific.
****in A peter, ****in A

Like I said, paint the upper fork legs black, and I'll take one in just about any color but red or yellow.

You got that right bubba......., but I think that red bike nailed it just as good as Kenny Dreer's Norton did.[/quote]
(i'll add, shorten up the rake a little, from the current version.)
It is the natural extention of the line. See the concept through. It works.
That was the bike I would have bought had it been offered. Triumph needs to move away from the mindset that the Bonnie line is a "starter" bike and that we will come around and buy tripples.

It would show the motorcycle world that the standard twin has been fully reborn as a modern bike and is a viable allternative to the norm.

The real problem: the Koreans/Tiawanese are coming (oops, already here) and after them comes the Chinese/Indian's. Then you have the value play already here that doesn't sell now, for sub-600cc bikes (been in a bike shop lately?). Next is that for a 3-5 year period we will see a significant drop off in the US consumers discretionary purchases (exchange rate and re-rationalize the SUV and house quandry -- in other words, spend what you have, not what you might have).

I'd love to see a nice mid-size thumper with great handling and good performance -- but I would only spend to a point. And it just isn't much cheaper to build a 500cc single than it is to build a 750 or 900 twin. Though a CRF450 turned into a supermotard (local racing org is working on classes for this for the coming season) ....

Angry Thruxton special rims

Hmmm, these rims look remarkably similar to the custom rims I was having PVM in Germany design (sent them my OEM rims) for me a couple years ago at great expense with the hope of selling them to other Thruxton owners. The rear looks identical, and the front is different only in that Triumph's is for an Ohlins dual disc front end and mine is for the stock rim/brake setup. Unfortunately, while the rear is great, PVM screwed up the front hub design so it was completely non-functional. I sent them back the OEM front for a re-design and have been waiting over a year for them to rectify the situation, which they do not appear to be very interested in doing though they have promised several times. I am just trying to get my OEM rim back from them now, and even that has proven problematic. If these are indeed made by PVM, they can thank me for providing the OEM rear years ago. If Triumph came to them and asked for the setup, they could have had it done in days considering the front is probably a standard sportbike rim. While I would be foolish to hope for a thank you from them, it would be nice if they would refund half my money and send my OEM parts back! You listening Jens? Here is my progress so far, stalled thanks to them: http://www.geocities.com/t309st/thru...?1195486696919

Holy "nothing to do with old freaking post".

But to answer your question:
I'm sure someone has bored out an 885.

You can fit anything into anything with enough dedication/knowledge/money.

I say do it.
