"I was originally very interested in Thruxton, but the sub 70 HP put me off. That was what drove me back to a Ducati, via the Paul Smart. A great looking bike with a classic retro look, but with modern, top shelf components aimed at a performance oriented rider, at a reasonable price (especially compared to the highly modified Deus).

That said, the current issue of Rider has an article about an informal Bonneville riders club in CA. One of the members owns a Triumph shop and had a Thruxton bored out to 1187 cc with claimed performance of 120 HP, nearly double the stocker. I'm curious how much that bike would cost, it would be worth considering."

Then there is a response from a familiar name a on this site...

"A flat-out lie... something this individual is highly prone to do. More like 70-75HP. $18K BTW."

What's up???

Check it out on www.ducati.ms, Sport Classic Forum.

got a link to the thread?

nevermind, I found it. I've heard similar tales of hyperbole.

For a Ducati, the Sport Classics are far from top shelf, but next to the Thruxton, they are still packed with much more modern components. I actually considered both, but side by side, the Thrux is better looking, and at the end of the day, I wouldn't choose either to ride to their limits. I would take a Daytona or 999 for that.

While I think some of the Ducs are beautiful...(I really enjoy the Multistrada 1000DL).
(and a friend of mine has an immaculate 750ss in his living room that was part o the Guggenheim display a while back.)
Similar to this:

In the end they just seem to be overpriced, maintenance intensive status symbols.

The Duc riders in my area are for the most part rich (or fancy themselves rich) tools. (Not all of them mind you...but most of them.)
I really don't care what Ducati owners think.

Whether they are or not depends entirely how you ride them.

Actually, a friend of mine just bought a GT1000 and the second service interval is at 15,000 miles (there's the usual first one at about 600). That ain't bad.

I also compared the Sport 1000 and the Thruxton. I chose the Thruxton because I knew I wanted a bike I could customize--on my own. I would have been reluctant to do much to the Sport 1000, I would have been afraid to do it myself, and I would have paid a lot more for every custom item. The Ducati version of TORs, for example, cost $1,400!!

All in all, I'm pretty happy with my Thruxton. In fact, a few hours after returning from a ride with my GT1000-owner friend, I walked into a garage on the other side of town to talk to the owner of an old BMW 2002. He looked at my jacket and said "You were at my neighbor's house this morning on that beautiful cafe'd Thruxton, weren't you?" He didn't mention a thing about the Ducati.

Yes I know it was a pretty broad generalization......
But here in California (Santa Barbara to be more specific)...Ducatis are suffering the same fate as Harleys & everything else that has a modicum of popularity.

I like what Jimbonnie said in response to my opinion..""In the end they just seem to be overpriced, maintenance intensive status symbols."

Exactly!

If you own a Duc & enjoy it & are not a tool....more power to you.

My friend was actually a Ducati wrench at Pro Italia for quite awhile & has a very nice Multistrada & dusts people on new ducs with his old 750 F1......

I have just never been a big fan of Ducatis or exotica in general & most of the owners this area aren't making a good case for me to start liking them ........................I appreciate a well made machine for sure....but ....I am not a GP rider & never will be.
Just my .02cents & worth less than that.

Personally I'd love to have either one of these:

Call me a status monger.

Hahaha....Mancha...

You would hate my friend in Santa Barbara then (one of the most humble rich folk I have ever met.)

He has a frickin brilliant MH900 with such crazy detail that you could look at it for hours.
(It was featured in Cycle World awhile back?...or one of those mags)...they were doing this story on a bunch of different Ducs....like Multistradas with all the high dollar catalog parts & whatnot.

Am I incorrect in stating that the 1000DL motors in the Multi are some of the first Duc twins that don't require intensive maintenance schedules?
(The GT1000 has the same motor I am going to assume.)

& for the record...I never said I wouldn't ride one..the GT is a great idea just like the Thruxton.

I love the look of the Paul Smart bike. I could not afford it and I didnt want to deal with the maintenance.
