How many others out there were influenced by rat.net in their purchase of a new triumph? Maybe there should be some sort of commission for the website
I fell in love with the look and style of the thruxton but after spending time on the forum I knew I had made the right decision.

It's funny to mention the forum as I am thinking about getting a Ducati Sport 1000 as a second bike (the Thrux will live in Europe and the Duc will be for New York City), anyway there is a big forum called www.ducati.ms and some times the guys can be cool, but sometimes they can be total Richards if you know I mean.
Most modding info regards getting super expensive components (Ohlins forks and shocks, Brembo calipers, etc) and have the dealer doing the installation.
It's almost talking me OUT of getting the bike and just getting a second Thrux in 2007 red.
Hmmmmm..........

When I got the Thruxton I knew I'd be willing to tackle it myself. When I considered the Duc I knew I'd be too scared to do things myself and would end up spending loads of money getting things done by the dealer.

One of the reasons I bought my Thruxton, (well, let's face it after I saw it I was invbenting resons to buy it  ) was that I thought I would be able to mod it in my garage and work on it the way I did my dirtbikes. So far so good :-D This forum was honestly another big reason I like the feel of community

For me....zero influence from the Internets.
The Internet groups attached to things are not a "scene" to me, I just like getting reliable info from people who know what they are talking about.
Whenever I get knee deep in a bike or a car (RD,Old Triumph,Vespa ,Lambretta,Ford, etc.) the corresponding user group / usually just facilitates my wallet being emptied.
After the bike or car goes...I usually disappear until the next bike appears.
On the up side,
This forum usually does not deal in misinformation & has a lot of accurate info.
With the exception of a couple of doorknobs....it is almost completely drama free as well.
(You should read some of the Scooter boards......sheesh  , talk about a bunch of babies...)

No forum influence (I'm sure if you asked on the Ural forum, they'd tell you to buy one). In fact, I found the forum after the Speed Triple. But I did read a ton of reviews on all the bikes I was considering. Repeatedly. What finally convinced me? The test ride. That's one practice that should be encouraged.

...as a new kid on the block...the forum helped with true first hand reviews of the bike. If you exhaust your (internet) resources, there aren't many literature reviews much after 2005...because the bike hasn't changed. I was curious to know how reliable and well liked the bike was after mods over time. I think the forum helped (me) a great deal in that regard....what do the loyal owners really think after while?

50/50. I had already decided that I wanted the bike, I knew I could work on it (no dealer for 300 miles!) but the forum did convince me of the reliability of the bike and gave me an idea of what problems to expect. Since puchace, this forum has certainly helped me make the bike MUCH better with less trial and error than I would have had on my own.

Nice topic... very interesting.
I can find myself in many reply's. I fell in love with the thrux on the internet (dealer site) and decided for myself to buy it the first time i saw it live at the dealer. Communities like this one helps convincing my girlfriend. (she liked the duc better first, thinks the thrux is the most sexy bike on earth now that i've got it )
But i'm also kind of a leech. I stay part of a community as long as it can offer me the things that i need to know (when doing repairs or mods). My restored '72 ford (consul coupé, for you english guys) is now finished for a year, and i have not visited a single ford community since that day.
Guess the thruxton is different. That is a never ending project
