Any suggestions for un-bluing the pipes?

(I know, I know.....Blasphemy...I just like the look of a little shine now and again....)

Blue Away works well. I got lazy and set them out to Jet-hot and got them Ceramic Coated.

I wrapped mine in black pipe tape for that true old school look!

I used blueaway also. It works, but requires a great deal of elbow grease. My results were limited as I left the pipes on the bike. I'm guessing that if you took the pipes off and used a bench-mounted polisher, things would go a great deal faster and with better results. Here are before and after shots of my bike:

I know that they look like different bikes...I had an accident that prompted the refurbishment. Notice how hard it was to clean up the pipe at the crossover...

I think blueing on a exhaust is like lipstick on a beautiful woman: It doesn't need it, but it sure does catch your eye.

Leave it be.

Curefan,
What grade steel wool? It has to be easier than that BlueAway...it wore me out. I wouldn't remove the blue, but I had an incident early in ownership that caused the pipes to grossly overheat. Now that I have removed the AI and sorted the jetting, the pipes no longer discolor. Thus, this is a one-time correction. The blue is okay, but I like the white chrome a little more.

If you use steelwool the blue won't be the only thing that comes off. The chrome will too, what you'll be seeing will be the Nickel below the chrome. Blue Away is not suppose to hurt the chrome if use according to instructions.

I use a product called Tar-Nite metal polish and an old cotton Tshirt. The stuff comes in a pint can and I get it at my local Ace Hardware runs about 4 to 5 bucks a can. if used with the T- shirt leaves no scratches. It is NOT A FAST WIPE ON WIPE OFF BLUING REMOVER. YOU WILL HAVE TO RUB FOR A WHILE.

You want fast use Blue Away and steel wool or blue away alone). I guarantee you gonna SCRATCH the poop out of your pipes.

Sheepdog,

I used Super Fine Steel wool and Blue Away together. I then polished with Simichrome and a Flitz Ball. It made the whole process very simple. I've only done it once and have not needed to repeat because the pipes have not blued as badly since.

Kadatz,

This process did not scratch the poop out of my pipes. I guess you just need to be careful how hard you rub.
