I love that seat cowl, and I have always wanted something similar. For some reason I would love to turn this curiosity into a project, but I have no metal shaping experience.

I was looking at the pics of Mike's thruxton project, specifically the seat cowl pics with the welds, and I was hoping someone could explain how the shaping took place.

Clearly he did not take a flat piece of metal and pound it into shape. So how did he do it? Would you start with a semi-circle piece of metal, cut out sections, bend it to the shape you want, and then weld in the missing sections?

If that was not clear, this image gives and idea of what I am thinking.

Or, if you cut it like that, would the cut pieces overlap and need to be trimmed, then welded?

As you can tell, I would like to give this a try, but have no idea what I would be doing.

Any help would be appreciated.

I love older triumphs - that is a cool project, it reminds me of Buggy's ride.

Buggy's early thrux conversion.

Nice bike. I like how it mixxes old and new technology, as well as custom parts. The only thing I don't like so far are the side covers. They come off looking low-tech next to the rest of it. Love the seat though, as well as the rearset mounts.

And thanks mepeck and Tabletop for the gallery link. I always enjoy seeing the process by which things are designed and put together.
