I am wanting to drill the slides per jenk's but am wondering if anyone had anything negative to say about it before I took the plunge as it is a non reversable deal. Also, for those who did it, did you just use a hand drill using the hole for a pilot? Any feedback positive or negative is appreiciated.

I've done it nothing negative to say.used a hand drill metal is very soft.use a clean NEW new drill bit.
It does improve throttle response
:-D

isn't another option to shorten the slide spring? either by cutting it or by tying several windings together? Has anybody tried this?

No negatives. I'm told a little Araldite can reverse the procedure should you wish.

I drilled mine yesterday, easy job. Better shifting and the throttle feels smoother. Cutting the spring will not give you the same results. If it makes you feel better about it, a dealer told me their jetting kit comes with a drill bit for the slide, so this is not just something we all fabricated on the internet. It is a real and noticeable mod.

Shortening the spring doesn't actually change the spring rate, so that is a no go. Replacing the spring with one of lesser rate will improve throttle response.
Increasing the vacuum port size by drilling does increase the rate at which the vacuum is generated in the chamber above the diaphragm. Reducing the volume of that chamber by filling the cap with some material will also increase the rate of vacuum increase.
There is no point in increasing the rate of slide rise without increasing demand by fitting freer flowing exhaust.
