I was wondering if anyone supports up shifting without the clutch. I frequent a sport bike forum and sounds like quite a few folks shift up with out using the clutch, at least during sprinted acceleration. I've accidently done this a few times and it didn't seem to hurt anything. I'm just curious if anyone does this with their modern classic.

I do it sometimes, usually works well at moderate throttle around 4,000 rpms. Seems really smooth.

Sometimes I'll pretend like I have a behind the leg jockey shifter and reach back there and click it up a gear when I'm next to a car. Makes the cagers scratch their head, other riders too, especially my friends that know I don't have a jockey shift.

OK to do it, we have the same type transmission. The shift should be accompanied by a small throttle roll off so that the gears are not under load during the shift. I still prefer using the clutch but you will be much smoother if you only pull the clutch lever in just a small amount when shifting.-T1

Shifting up without a clutch presents no problem with a modern gear box. Pre-load the selector in anticipation of the shift, roll off very, very, slightly and click! I always use this method on the track and use it on the road if I'm pushing so it's always done at peak revs. I can't see the point of doing this lower in the rev range, but don't believe it would do any damage provided you get the timing right. It's a quick thing....

I clutchless upshift when hitting it hard. A take off from my motocross racing where that was the norm.

Preload the shifter (up or down shift) push the kill button. The momentary ignition shut down will fake out the transmission long enough for it to shift up or down. This is an old drag racer trick. If your bike does not have a kill button, install one. :-D
