hi all. i have an 04 thruxton with tors fitted. just wondering if anyone else has had any problems getting insurance after they fitted after market pipes, carol nash and bennetts don`t want to know so i`m now faced with having to put the standard pipes back on or risk having the insurance company pull the plug if anything happens.
any advice or insurance recomendations would be much appreciated, i don`t want to go back to standard but no insurance is a big no no. cheers.

Why do you have to tell them and what do they care? If it gets in a wreck, I suppose you won't be compensated for the pipes but they should still cover the stock bike.

typhoo,

No problems with Norwich Union bike insurance, I just renewed mine yesterday. I get my insurance over the phone via Motorcycle Direct, call 0870 755 8250 for a quote. My Scrambler with Norman Hyde Togas is £245 fully comp with legal protection, breakdown cover and continental cover. You have to declare that you have non-legal pipes, then the girl phones NU who always say yes. Noisy pipes and yer erse covered too, tip top :-D

Whoa!. That just blew my mind. When I see things like this in Europe, it makes me think we'll see it here someday.

hi all, i`ve rung round a few more insurance companies, norwich union have said yes, thanks Johnyc, but £100 more than carol nash want if i put the standard pipes back on.
you have to be straight with insurance companies because if the worse was to happen they would use any excuse not to pay out.
i was told by a couple of other thruxton riders that tors would`nt affect my cover, you live, you learn.

Wow, I guess in the U.S. it's seen diferently. They ask if you have any aftermarket parts and if you want to insure them, but it won't stop them from paying on what you have been paying for. If they tried not to pay for my bike because I put pipes or performance parts or diamond studded rims for that matter I would have a great court case. What was I paying them all that money for? the blue book of my stock bike, that's what.

AVMECH,

It doesn't work like that over here, they'll try every body-swerve known to man rather than pay out. I saw a girl in a documentary on motor insurance who had her claim turned down, because her car had non standard alloy wheels. You can fit what you like, but you have to declare it or yer bum's oot the windae in the event of a claim. In uk anyway.

wow! drunk and no offense, but I'm glad we threw some tea in the harbor about 200 years ago. If I droped it tonight, I have TOR's, Homemade airbox removal, gators and that's all, but It wouldn't mater what it was. As long as I did't hit anyone and they hit me, it would be covered. After market bit's aside, I pay for the stock bike, and That's what they will pay for. What I pay them for. I don't declare any after market goodies and don't expect to get paid for them. blue book of stock bike and I'm good.!!!!

Typhoo, why not insure the bike with standard pipes.
Then phone the insurance company and tell them the original pipes needed repalcing and you've just put genuine replacement Triumph pipes on. If they don't ask, there's no need to say they're TORS! But at least it will be recorded on file that you informed them.

I had a very heavily modified Buell, a while back, and each year I'd tell the insurance about a few more of the modifications, but I'd always justify the changed bit.
The seat was changed to give more comfort so I could concentrate on riding.
The lights were changed so I could see better at night.
The pipes were changed to give smoother running throughout the rev range.
The gearing / cogs were changed so it had better pickup at low speeds..
The swingarm changed to stiffen up the back end and give me more control.
Etc etc.
As long as you can justify the change on the grounds of safety (however tenuous that reason may be!) the insurance companies have no problem
