Does anyone out there know in the state of Califonia if it is legal not to run a spedometer? I'm in the middle of a project on my bike where it looks as if im going to have to s***** it.

Thanx,

I cant talk specifically about CA but usually its not a legal requirement to have one, just no defence if you break the speed limits.

I have to disagree, I know for a fact in PA you have to have one and I might be wrong but I'm sure most states are the same. There is probably an online resource to check, possibly even check your states DMV requirements online. My brother gets around it on his 74 Bonnie bobber by mounting a small one on the side of the engine that you can hardly see. It is useless but his bike has the clean look that he likes and is legal. There are some small Speedo/tach combos that are available that are fairly cheap or use a digital bicycle speedo, they are about the size of a wristwatch and will give you a clean look.

+1

Ray, go to Performance Bike Shop in Vista and you can get a little Digital Speedo for $20-$30. They are tiny, and work great. A small magnet will mount on the spokes and you can get a wireless version for a few more bucks.

AMA State Laws
has info on state laws, didn't see anything about speedometers in particular though.
Other link
it looks like this one is from a lawyer, use at your own risk.

alifornia Vehicle Code - scroll down to Division 12 (equipt). Doesn't say anything about a Speedo - but it most certainly has a code for an Odometer.

Georgia Code: 40-8-8; every motor vehicle operated on public streets must have a working speedometer.

From what I hear, if you breathe on your bike wrong in Califorina you will be shot on sight.
