Hey there...new here and a new owner of a used stock '04 Thruxton.
Let me apologize in advance....
Its my first Triumph, and now that I'm ready to start doing some simple mods and I was wondering where I can find the best deals and info on the following:
1.) New mufflers, I like the stock style, but I don't want it obnoxiously loud
I've seen the staintune pipes, but pricey for me, what alternatives are there and where should I buy them online? Are the Triumph custom thrux pipes any better than the stock ones?
2.) Also, I'd love to do the rear fender elimination kit. I haven't found a resource for them that looks reputable though. Help please?
3.) And lastly. Can anyone explain to me what removing the A1 is? Does that have something to do with the carb's jets? If not, can someone please point me in the right direction there as well. How to do it, and why?
I know, I know....I'm such a newbie. I'm a car-nut turned bike enthusiast wannabe. I'm just trying to learn the ropes and looking for help. Thanks in advance!
-Ben

Welcome Ben.I`ve heard the stock mufflers and the TORs [Triumph Off Road]on the same bike under the same conditions and in MY opinion, the difference in volume was minor but the tone was nicer. My suggestion, wait until you can hear different pipes for yourself, then decide the cost/sound trade-off.
Look thru the member photo albums for ideas regarding the rear fender.Check the album for ThruxTonUp for the epitome of DIY form and function.
Removing the AI has little or nothing to do with rejetting. It cleans up the looks of the engine, make it easier to get to the plugs and might have kept SOME of the bluing out of the pipes, but that would have had to have been done before the bike was ever started..The kits from BellaCorse and NewBonneville are complete and effective.
Enjoy your new hobby.
Steve

I have the TORs and they sound great. Quiet round the neighborhood, and open up out in the canyons etc. Predators are also very top notch, a little more "agressive" sounding compared to TORs. AirBox elimination really makes the more open exhausts perform.

As RodBurner pointed out, supprt our supporters with Bella Corsa and New Thruxton, both top notch and I have ordered from both. My wife may not like em' but we do...!

No sense repeating, Rodburner got ya' covered

You then are doomed to mod... Enjoy and welcome to the "fold"

Try British Customs. They have a performance package deal that includes a air box elimination kit , predator exhausts, and a air injection elimination kit.

New Thruxton has sound clips of the most popular exhausts, except the predators, which you'll find on british cutoms' website. TORs are probably the quietest of the aftermarket pipes.
You can cut down your stock fender (here's how), get a kit from bellacorse, new thruxton or BC, or even just get a $30 plastic piece from new thruxton. Unbolting the fender should be easy, but you need something under there to protect the underside of the seat and electrical bits. Once the fender is gone, you'll need to figure out how to mount tail and turn lights. Looking at how others worked it out can get you started.
The AI is a pollution control thing. If you've got a rubber hose that comes out of the top of the engine next to the spark plugs, then your AI is still intact. It takes a bit of exhaust gas and puts it back through the engine through a hose connected to the intake manifold. My opinion of the AI is that it super-heats the engine (turns the pipes blue) and is probably a primitive polution control at best.
Congrats on the new bike. You're gonna love it. :upthumb:

Ben - 3 years ago no one had a fender eliminator kit so I made my own. Its very easy and if you have worked on cars then this should be something easy to accomplish. I cut down the stock rear fender and then made a bracket out of 1/8 aluminum. Cut it out with a hack saw, bent it with boards and a vise, drilled to mount be using longer bolts on the rear fender mounts and bolted it to the these longer and spliced it into the stock wiring. Tail light is an LED billet unit available at most custom bike shops - has a license light too. Its a couple hour project.

Putting things together to try and get an idea of what the bike is going to look like. Did see a real nice color at the paint shop called Cosmic Black Pearl - its a strong front runner for the new color with some Titanium metalic stripes maybe.

Wow...thanks so much for all the advice and input. I'm following up on all your leads. I'm really enjoying the bike! I'll proabbly go with the TORs. Since I have the center stand. These should work with the factory cente stand, right?
I've always wanted a Triumph bike since I was a kid. And now I finally have one...and it's cooler than I ever thought it could be! I'm glad I found this forum, you all are top notch. Thanks a bunch!
