Sorry to break away from original thread , whats the go with the clock between the speedo and tacho. Looks geat ! where did you get it and how did you cover the idiot lights up ?

cheers Staf

Great mod everyone, Oldskoolfool if you have not fixed the loose fit yet on your bike ,I have some old metal edge cover that is a squair U shape total height .180 and .035 material thickness. This is a black rubber and would fit on like a door edge.
Sorey so late just found the thred.

My 2 cents

To the thread that just won't die, here's my contribution. I just recently completed my speedo/tach cans project that were tore up in my accident last May. I did the "square bottom" cans and to any one that's interested, the thermos cups catalog number is now DF2110. I found the thermos at Wally World but since they got popular they were priced at $21.95 per thermos. The cost plus shipping to Texas was $11. Cheap mod, cheap price and looks good.:D

Help

I know that this has been touched on before but for anyone that used the Thermos rounded cups, how did you accurately line up the bolt holes and cuts for the stainless pods? If I insert the Triumph pod into the intact Thermos cup with the plastic liner to trace it there is a lot of wiggle room. I'm afraid that I will mess up the alignment. Did you just measure it, or did you remove the plastic inner and insert the factory pod and trace? I know that there is probably a easy solution as a lot of people seem to have done this mod. I feel like I'm missing something, any suggestions would be appreciated?

Cheers.

If I remember correctly, I placed the old cup back to back (or bottom to bottom?) and marked my hole locations on the new cup through the existing holes of the old cup. Once those holes were drilled I stacked the new cup into the old, lined up the holes, then marked the location on the side for the slot cut.

Thanks for the tips guys.

There was a cut-out tab on my Thermos cups where I wanted the slits for the wires to go, so if I traced the holes on the cups bottom to bottom the holes reversed their orientation to the cut out. I got the mod done by removing the plastic liner (with some elbow grease) and tracing from the inside.

For any one trying to remove the liners from a Thermos cup I relized after the fact that the glue is the type used in a glue gun, so heating it with a blow dryer prior to removal would loosen up the glue and make the process much easer :)

Great mod!

For those that are interested in doing this mod but have been unable to find the cups...

I called Thermos customer support last friday at 1-800-831-9242 and ordered two replacement cups for model DF2212. Three days later they are in my mailbox at a total of $9.50 delivered.
I was going to provide an update that the DF2212 Thermos is still available from WallyMart via online to store pickup, but just ordering the cups is much better. Price has gone up to $17.87 since this thread was started 5 years ago. Here is the link to my least favorite store's website:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Thermos-T...acuum-Insulated-Large-Food-and-Beverage-Bottle-1.3-qt/16516596?findingMethod=rr

I'm looking at the picture, did they change the cup some by adding a little handle? The model number is now DF2212W2.

I'm about to add a tach using a D9 panel to my 2001 Bonneville so I'll upgrade the pods too, what a great idea. With the layflat D9 panel, I might have a clearance issue with the rounded bottoms.

Thanks Truckdude...& small tips for easier modifications

To Truckdude, and all the others here that had these great ideas

Truckdude, Thank you for the Ikea cup idea. Perfect fit. Great price too. I just did it! I have always thought I would do this modification to my bike but never got around to ordering the Thermos cups. SO When I saw your post about IKEA cups I decided to give it a try today. The Ikea cups are not available on line (when I checked) but I have an Ikea store close by so I got some Ikea cups as you suggested.

The project was so quick and came out better than I expected.
It took me two hours from start to finish and I took my time.
After just finishing this project I have some small tips that I think may be helpful and make it easier for someone else willing to try this.
As already mentioned by others here use the stock plastic Triumph cups as templates for what you are cutting.
TIPS
I used some tin snips (Harbor Freight 3 pack snips). I used the yellow handle straight cuts snips to make all cuts. This was so easy and came out so smooth I would use this tin snip method again to make more gauge cups if I had to. Using the tinsnips on the long cuts was fast and to be safe I made several passes cutting only about 1/4 inch off at a time so I did not deform the metal at all. On the notched areas I cut the small side cuts then used pliers or needle nose to bend back and forth and brake off the piece to remove. Finished off by de-burring sharp edges with files and a rat tail file to radius the end of the long notched area for the wires.
I also did not need to remove the tach and speedo mount bracket bolts (the 4 that hold the mount to the triple clamp) but just loosened them about 1/4 inch to give more wiggle room to work and no worry of slapping and scratching the tank with the loose stuff. Speaking of those same bolts going into the triple clamp, those 4 bolts when you go to tighten them up be aware the bolts have shoulders that fit precisly into the bracket plate. Wiggle the bracket as you button up the job and tighten these bracket bolts so you don't muck up the bracket or bolts. That's it. I need to go riding now and check out these cool stainless steel gauges! Thanks again!
