I need (badly) a new set of tires for my thruxton. I've got 8500 miles on the original tires, and my riding buddies are starting to make fun of me, even scold me for pushing it. I think they have a point. Sooooo...
I'm looking for some advice on tires models and sizes. I prefer cornering grip to long wear when it comes to tires, though I don't want a race compound tire, if there is such a thing that will fit our bikes.
1. First, do I need tube or tubless tires (i thought all spoke wheels needed tube tires, but I've thought wrong in the past).

2. What brand/model tire provides more grip than the stock metzlers (metronic front). They aren't awful, but looking for something grippier.

3. What size - thinking the stock is fine. I've had bad results in messing with sizes on other bikes. no experience with the thruxton.

4. Why is my front tire badly cupped after 8500 mi? Is the front wheel out of balance (it had a lot of balance weights stuck to the rim from day one)?

I've scanned/searched the board for some concise info, but not finding all the answers... thanks for your help. No nylon threads showing yet, but could be soon.

For what it is worth:
spokes = tubes
I have a Michelin Pilot Power 180 on the rear and just got my Michelin Pilot Road 110 up front today...
I can tell you I have been all the way over on the Pilot and the confidence in the twisties is fantastic.
I too, relish the twisties over straight line perfomance, at least until the Wiseco kit goes in....

as for your cupping, riding habits aside...I'd suspect tire pressure as the likely culprit.

The tires I've tried listing my favorite to least. With the Avon's I can drag the pegs with total confidence - I mean you can lean that bike WAY over and it tracks and grips - no wobbles or head shakes. JCW

1 Avon Azaro ST45 and 46
2 Dunlop GT 501's
3 Bridgestone BTO20's
4 Stock Metzlers.
