This is/was the state of the packing in my D & D's after 3.5k miles...

Now they sound nasty again!

Good to see what bad D&Ds look like. I'm sure mine need repacking. Thanks for posting the pic. Wish you'd posted the after shot as well, showing what good D&Ds look like. :-D

Why do these need to be repacked? How does one go about repacking?

D&D uses cheap fiberglass packing in sheet form and crushes it down by tightly wrapping it with packing tape. This basicly closes off the perforations creating a straight pipe effect. If you want to drop the note and get better tone quality you can repack using ceramic based packing and stainless steel wool. One layer of wool on the core then layer ceramic based packin on top of that. The wool keeps the packing from blowing out and increases its life. Packing it loosely allows the gasses to absorb into the packing instead of bypassing it and helps it sound much better. I know all of this because I worked as their tech support guy for two years before moving on to better things.

eldiabloe is right on, the stock packing is *****!
I just used some packing from my local shop, in sheet form and re-wrapped each baffle.
what a difference!
next time, I'll try something more permanent but the packing was only $10.

Ceramic packing:

Stainless Steel wool:

You may be able to find other sources with better pricing but these are the two I used.
