I’m taking apart my front forks to replace them with F3 internals but for the life of me I cant seem to get that hex bolt from the bottom of the fork lowers.

When I try to loosen it all that happens is the internals inside just spin. I loosened them when the forks where still together (like the manual says) but I cant seem to get these bolts out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Surferjo,
I had the same problem, here is the link to the thread Damper Rod Tool.
Where in NY are you? If you are anywhere near Yonkers you are welcome to come on over and we'll get those forks apart.

I had the same problem, there is no special tool for it. All you can do is to use a wrench key and to block the bolt with a long stick from the other side.

Are you talking about the fork oil drain bolt? Just leave the fork spring in place and put a small amount of pressure on it, if necessary; the drain bolt will screw right out. Same procedure for putting it back in.

Check out thruxtonone's album for a complete picture breakdown - and search the old threads - there were several people doing this a year or 2 ago. I have several pics of the gold valves I used and honda cartridges in my album. JCW

I used a long threaded 3/8 rod with two jam nuts on both ends. If required grind nuts or wrap tape around them so that they are a tight fit in the damper rod. I like the idea of using the spring load to hold the rod if you can get enough pressure. I did not try that. Check t ups and my albums for some good detail on this installation. It is very worthwhile. Use 5-7 wt oil when you rebuild.-good luck- thruxtonone

GOT IT!!!!!!

The Damper rod tool gave me the idea. I used a broom handle and a ratchet tie down. Cranked it up in there and the bolt came out no problem.

Thanks for all the good advice.

Now I just have to figure out how to install the F3 internals. I’m sure that will be the topic of my next post
