I real biker owns a bike for the love of the ride. It does not matter if your bike(s) gets ridden every day or just on the weekend. If you ride to ride you are a biker, or better yet as Cafetbird put it "motorcyclist."

A poser is someone who has bought a bike for any other reason, to look cool, to show how much money they have etc... A poser will not respect the motorcycle and will eventually get hurt on it or never ride it.

As for me, I have two bikes and ride primarily on the weekends. I have a take home car from work. I don't care if a person rides a Triumph, Harley, Honda, BMW or any other bike, as long as they ride I consider them part of the brotherhood.

On another note I have noticed several of the posts on this site getting kind of uppity. People look down on others if they have a stock Thruxton instead of a Custom Cafe. Well my attitude is ride whatever you want and have it in whatever condition you want it in. Just ride. I am now stepping off my soapbox.

A real motorcyclist can identify 10 insects by taste.

Posts like this are just one of the many reasons I don't like bikers. I usually only get to ride on weekends, and sometimes not even then. I don't consider everyone on 2 wheels straddling a motor a "brother". I don't spend every free dollar on bolt-on ***** for my bikes and don't like to ride in packs. I'm not a biker. I'm just a guy that likes motorcycles. Call me what you want, I'll smile when I'm happy and cry when I'm sad. No matter who you are there will always be someone more "hardcore" than you so why bother trying to justify every little thing we do? Do what makes you happy and don't worry whether or not you're "real", because no matter who you talk to there will be a different perception.

My rant's done, who wants ice cream?

Other Motorcycle: I wish!
Well said Flankspeed.

I work with a guy who owns a Softail Deuce that clocks up maybe 1000 miles per year.

He loves to ride but his job does not enable him to ride to work so he has to drive his car.

Now, I commute on my TBS or Ural and clock up 10-12,000 miles per year.

Does that make me any more "real" than my friend?

I think not.

LOL - what amuses me is how seriously some folks start taking these frivilous discussions in forums.

I really like the posters who criticize folks for being judgemental. Me thinks that would make THEM hypocritical!?!

Face it, as human beings, we all have some prejudices. Some of the folks in here that make sanctimonious statements today will be on the road, criticizing someone tommrrow for how they ride, where they ride, what they ride, what gear they wear (or don't wear), how loud (or quiet) their pipes are.....

But that's O.K., this ain't a perfect world, and there are no perfect people. We are all out there in pursuit of our own happiness, hopefully not at the expense of others.

At the end of the day, none of it will matter; just keep the shiny side up, and keep on riding. :-D

I got to think'n the other day 'bout them fools in their wannabe 'outlaw' motorcycle clubs. You know who I'm talking about, got the scowl going on, an attitude, a bunch of idiots riding in angry/LOUD groups.... whatever, more power to 'em.

Anyway, I have a couple buddies who fancy themselves "bikers", as they belong to the type of group I spoke of above. They have their little meetings, put on the annual fund raiser, ride together occasionally to another club's function, and ride maybe an hour away to a bar, then to another bar, and maybe two MORE bars...... all within a radius of a hundred miles at most. That's what they do, that's ALL they do!

I (on the other hand) ride to the foothills having not to answer to anybody nor to some "club". I get on the bike and ride a couple hundred miles to the coast, to a distant gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts, a Poker Run, or an hour away on a Friday night just to listen to some Blues at a brewery somewhere.

I don't have to ride coupled up with another "brother" as we motor down the road sporting our 'colors'. I'm not obligated to throw back some JD with fellow scary wannabe motorcycle gang members. I don't have to attend the monthly AMA meeting, the club meeting, or "required attendance" function....... I run my own, I simply don't hafta ANYTHING!

Anywaaaaay, this is what I was thinking as I shared the road with a new friend on his KTM Adventurer, or with a buddy as we rode together through the "Gold Country" of Central California, or that ABATE Poker Run a couple hours away from home, or even chatting it up with the couple on their Gold Wing at a little steak house along the Sacramento River.....
I was thinking....... thank GOD I don't belong to a motorcycle club, either "outlaw", "HOG", "Bikers for Jesus", "Blue Knights", or 'Black Widows'.....
because belonging to a motorcycle club would get in the way of my being able to ride my bike anywhere I like, and as often as I want.

Am I "Biker"? Yes.... and thank God, HELL NO!
I AM a 'Free Rider', riding wherever, whenever, and with whomever I want.

All bikers are posers.

I agree with Fattrat. I ride alone 99% of the time. I'll wave to anyone on 2 wheels, and occasionaly to the scooter rider I mistake for a motorcyclist. My dad and brother ride maybe 500 miles a year, sometimes I'll ride with them. Most of the time they have to charge their batteries before they ride.

I never have to charge my battery. If I go 2 days without riding I feel disconnected.

Webster’s defines a Biker as

1 entry found for Biker.

1. One who rides a bicycle or a motorbike.
2. A motorcyclist, especially a member of a motorcycle gang.

I personally would define a true biker as one whose only mode of transportation is a bike. By that rationale I would have to consider myself a poser at least until I figure out a way to securely mount the car seat the back of the Thrux.

A better question might be would a true biker really be concerned with something as trivial as labeling his level of “Bikerism”?

Who cares. Stop worrying about other people and if they're as cool as you. Live and let live.
