Underpowered? "Under" needs some reference point to be meaningful at all. Underpowered compared to what?

Compared to a performance car like a Mustang? I can accelerate at least as fast as a Mustang up to well past legal speeds, so with that reference point it has plenty of power.

Compared to a sportbike? Of course it is 'underpowered' compared to a vehicle that gives Ferrari-like performance for under 15K. This is, to me, a ridiculous comparison considering modern sportbikes are pretty much track bikes with mirrors and lights.

That term, underpowered, shows the bias we have in North America. More is better - always. Did the old cafe racers have fun tearing around London on bikes that could barely top the ton? Sure they did, so why is it so utterly disappointing to ride 20% faster than they did on a bike considerably more reliable? The Thrux is an absolute blast even straight stock and with some judicious mods, can be a beautiful bike with pretty decent performance.

If you want a sportbike, buy a sportbike.

A 1200cc engine option wouldn't be my wish for changes to the Thruxton - I'd set the bar much lower. I'd be nearly satisfied with a helmet lock, quick release seat, and maybe a toolkit. Why did they skip these essential (to me) items? I still bought the bike knowing it lacked these simple, inexpensive, and commonplace items, though that doesn't mean I don't miss them... Yeah, I know the Thruxton is supposed to be a more pure, stripped "race" version of the Bonneville, but the Bonneville is missing them too.

Sorry if my list of upgrades makes you yawn.

Alright GUYS. Underpowered is relitive to what you ride. I have ridden the Thrux and many other bikes over the years the the Thrux is under powered. My Norton, which is not stock is a better performer. My V-7 sport is not. The V-7 has side car gears and will hit the 130 mph mark. Good exhaust helps. The 850 Guzzi Le mans I owned will eat a Thrux alive and give it change for a dime. The 903Z I had is still an animal bike(very poor chasis). My old Duck Darmah Desmo is no contest a more powerfull unit to the Thrux. The Thrux's I have ridden are great performer's and a DELUX ride. A real blast to ride in stock form. But my Dodge Viper is a pure speed freak rush . It really is realitive. :-D :-D The ultimate question is, what do you really want a motorcyce to do? Is the Hyuyamasukihonwaski (UJM) the answer? If it were, you would not be reading this forum. Buy your Thruxton's and modify the s**t out of it. That is what motorcycles are about. The term is called personalization. The UJMS are Cookie Cutter Sterile Units. Triumph's, Ducati's, Guzzi's, Agusta's are NOT. The New Non Available Norton Is A WET DREAM. If It finally shows, I might consider one. Sure looks Good, Respectively Yours, Steve Du Bose. Gear Head at large. I Really do LOVE the smell of CORDITE in the morning. :-D

Steve Du Bose,

I like your taste in bikes. I have a Thruxton, obviously, but am also looking hard at a local Norton Commando S with a high compression kit and the V-7 is also on my list but a rare bird. I'd also like to have an old Guzzi Eldorado or Ambassador for cruising days.

ACE57, man
The old Eldos are really cool. Comfort is the key. Find one with the front disc brake assemble, and convert it to twin discs. (did I say Duel? disc Brakes?) Those old El Dorado's just do not break. If you find one, be sure you convert the ignition to and electronic unit for reliability :-D Then you can ride the S**T out of it for the next 20 years :-D Steve Du Bose, MSG. :-D
