changed my oil today and even though the manual says 1.03 US gallons(4 quarts) for an oil and filter change. my sight glass reads almost to the top with only 4 quarts in. is this safe? or should I drain some out?

I CANT SAY IF THATS AN UNSAFE LEVEL,BUT I THINK THE REASON YOU WOULDNT WANT TOO MUCH OIL IS (sorry caps) because the counter weights on the crankshaft or something like that fling oil up on the cylender walls. if oil level is too high they will churn up a froth ,or air bubles of some kind. if you have air bubles on friction surfaces, then you dont have oil there.air doesnt lubricate nearly as well as oil

not that that helps ya but....

I don`t have a manual,but I`ve changed my oil/filter three times now.My Bonnie only takes 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 qts.
When level, the oil is approx.1/2 up the sight glass. :???:

I don't know if that level is a bad thing or not. I've been told the best level is about 3/4 of the sight glass.

I had the same problem when I changed the oil on my Speed Four. It does not have a sight glass, but rather a very short dipstick. To be on the safe side, I drained out about 1/2 qt, then very carefully re-filled till I was where I needed to be.

You don't have to remove the drain plug completely, just enough for some oil to drain out. Make sure the oil isn't hot before hand (duh), and wear some protective gloves. It only took me about 5 min to correct the problem. Ride the bike around a little then check the level again

Better safe then sorry. And besides, it gives you another excuse to wrench on the bike :upthumb:

Good luck~

Thanks guys, I will drain out a little bit and recheck. When is the best time to check the oil level? warm or cold I can never remember.

cheers, jason
