Yes, I've seen this done. But it's only with the newer (2001-+) locks. Good thing my locks are the older (ie: 10-15 years) and where made before they changed to the newer. cheaper locks. The can still be broken with a can of freon, or with a car jack in under 15 seconds. They can also be sawed open in a couple minutes.

But the reality is, if someone really want to steal your bike, they are going to. Nothing short of sitting on it with a sawed off shot gun 24/7 can trully protect your bike. The key is to make your bike the least attractive target.

If my road dirt covered Thruxton is under a locked cover, cabled to a lightpost, has a brake lock, and is parked next to a unlocked shiny new ZX-10R, which bike do you think the thieves will go for 1st?

Again, I lived and worked in downtown Washington D.C. for 20 years (yes, during the crack wars) and never had a bike stolen.

your milage may vary

Beav,

After that Bic pen fiasco, Kryptonite changed the style of cylinder used in their locks so that pens won't fit in the hole. I have one of the newer style locks. The chain I use is one of those monster gold square linked kind. Supposedly not so easy to cut through. However, if the lock it the weakest link what does the strength of the chain matter, right?

Unfortunately, in our society, Tarmac is correct about people taking what they want. There was a woman who had a Kawasaki Ninja on my block a few years back. Apparently in the middle of the day in front of a hair salon and people walking by, a van pulled up and several guys got out lifted the bike into the back and drove away before anyone realized what had happened. Literally 30 seconds and they were gone. Happened so fast that no one thought to get the plate number of the van. Hell, there probably wasn't one anyway. But sadly, it's an unfortunate aspect of our society that you can't own anything nice without some jackass trying to steal it.

Future plans will be along the lines of what Tarmac does. I don't really love the idea of carrying a cover around, but it's less frustration than coming back to finding your bike on its side or worse yet..... gone.. I'm still considering the electrocution device though.. Maybe set up across the street in the bushes and watch just for entertainment..

well if you really want to be sure , why don't you got to some south african web sites and check out their anti theft devices, my favorite is the automatic flame thrower installed underneath the doors.
