I'm excited to start this thread and i hope this gets attention and advice. Its going to be kind of a long few posts. I started this build thread on another forum before i found Triumph Rat. It was on a car forum i've been on for years and i really haven't got much response. It's been viewed a lot, but not many ideas or thoughts.

First off, here is my 2012 Thruxton. Got her in April. It's my first street bike and i'm loving it so far. Here she is the day i bought her.

After driving her home. This is her with my brother's bike (2008 thrux)

My nephews were excited for me

Well, I couldn't wait very long to get to making changes.
First think i did was remove the front fender. That was easy and cheap

I ordered my Pipes days later but had to wait for my 500 mile check up before i could put them on. I did my research on TR and found the Lossa Stubbies.

I put them on and was already loving where it was going

Here's a short sound bite.

Shortly after that i started doing research on what i'd do next. I love the idea of the NARK or other air box delete kits, but i feel that 300 bucks is a little Crazy. I have access to a sheetmetal shop and i'm a Design detailer so i'm currently in the process of building my own. Here's the "Prototype build day"

that last one has Bella, my Shop dawg in the pic. she's great haha.

I'm still not done with that project BTW. Soon after that i started buying other goodies.

I sat on those signals for a while, while i waited for my FEK and plate re-locator from British Customs
I got The new Grips and Bar ends put on. I couldn't stand those napoleon mirrors.

Eventually i got the FEK

Plate installed

Signals installed

I'm really liking where she's headed.

Keeping in mind that my eventual vision for her is Black and Gold themed. I'd like it to be matte black and black powder coated trim with a few gold accents. The triumph badge will be gone and painted on in gold.

Soon after all that i was asking on TR about other's who've done color changes. I met Troy and it turned out he had bought a black bike when the dealer didn't have the red bike he wanted, and i bought the red bike when my dealer didn't have the black bike i wanted. Turned out he lives miles from a vacation destination i was already planning on going to. We decided to swap tins.

Here's how she looked after the swap.

It's not the exact black i want, but it will allow me to buy my gold accents and not make the bike look like a 49'rs bike. :D

So today, i did the de-badge that i've wanted to do. To answer the question...2012 does not have screw studs. lol

here's how Bianca sits today after the de-badge, wash, clay bar, paint clean, polish, wax. Not too shabby if you ask me. I'm really excited to start the next few steps.

Chocolate brown seat, Exhaust wrap on the way, Clip on-s for christmas.

What do you guys think?

I like it except the removal of the guards which i'm suprised that its legal without them, i was wincing when i saw the black paint as i like the red/white theme but then smiled when iread that you swapped the metal work with some one else.
I really dont like the look of stubbie cans att all no matter what the brand as i think it looks unfinished but each to their own.

Nice build. The wonderful thing about these bikes is the originality. It is so easy to make it your own. A couple of the post were about what they don't, but what really matters is how you feel about it. Especially when you know people notice you on such a distinct machine. Keep up the great work and continue to express yourself through your great bike.

thanks guys. I don't mind some criticism. I also appreciate the one's who dig it too. If you don't hear what other people like (even if it's not what i may initially like) i'll never get new ideas. I'm considering putting my front fender back on to see how i like it....after all, i can take it back off if i really hate it lol.

i was going to ask...

I'm guessing this "Guards" is an ausie term for fenders? there's no law...to my knowledge...about presence, or lack there of, of fenders.

I'm really in debate this week about the paint scheme.

There are Three ideas.

1. All painted bits will be matte black, with gloss black stripes replacing the "gold" stock ones. No painted logo, cause i don't think a gloss gold logo would go well on the Matte finish (agree, disagree?)

2. Deep, gloss black with Gold pinstripes and "Triumph" logo in gold leaf.

3. Matte black with gloss areas framed in gold pinstripe and gold leaf triumph logo. the rear cowling will get some sort of design with both gloss and matte. the side covers would probably get some sort of graphics , not yet thought of.

The other accents will be in gold accessories. Chain, clutch lever, break lever, "made in England" decal, other bits like that. I've debated about Ohlin's springs, and forks, or progressive piggy back shocks. I'm in such debate on a lot of this.

Thoughts?

you guys and your little islands are wierd. lol Just kidding. I just wanna know the terms so i can keep up. like Lane "filtering". In the US, if i say that to a friend they look at me and ask, "what are you filtering? that doesn't make any sense." We call it splitting out here in california. and sharing in some parts. but filtering is something you do to oil, coffee, air and so on, not lanes...Any way. It's not required here. i'm toying with putting my front one back on. But, i can't find all 4 bolts. Bike bandit has em though, so no worries.

As for my previous question.

Good questions...

Idle. Moderate to quiet. You can carry on a normal conversation and warm up the bike without worrying about waking neighnors.

Throttle. loud. Not as loud as some harley's i've heard, but deffinitly there. I've talked to all my immediate neighbors and none have expressed annoyance.

Other. I have not removed my AI, thusly i have major decel popping and occasionally backfireing. I've been told that once i remove the AI it goes away. ThruxtonBill has the same pipes and no backfiring. his AI is removed. I had my bike re-balanced by triumph. eventually after a few more mods i'll get a tune from TTP and i'm sure that will help too.

It's actually super freaking bright...also if a person is to my left, why would they care if i'm breaking. Isn't a break light for the person behind you?

I am confused . . . you traded the red tins for pearl black and now are having the pearl black painted, well, black? Why not just paint the red? If I did not miss something and that's your plan, you're gonna want to strip the tank and remove the stripe . . .

Don't overdecorate with gold everywhere. Tacky.

May not be a law about the front fender, but it just looks downright silly w/o one.

You asked ;)

#19 ·
It's all good. I've got a fourth screw coming for
Bike bandit for the front "guard" soon.

So for the color change. I always wanted black. It was my desire from day one to build a black bike with a few touches of gold, chain, levers logo. I was really torn cause I couldn't afford a paint job which meant I didn't want red and gold so I'd have to wait on a bunch of parts till a few years. So I traded for black. It's not the black I really wanted. I don't like metal flake. So I want to get a few quotes on paint for next year or so. I can't do that without knowing what I actually want. Make sense?

I'll be putting the front fender back on soon.

Gotcha- sounds like a great plan. I have Cosmos Black (light metalflake, BMW M3 color) on one of my CB350s- love it. It may grow on you. I have a really good painter who is 'somewhat' reasonable ;) Josh at OldSchoolHelmets. He has done three of my bikes. He is in CA.

I almost went with satin black stripes on my BMW project, but changed my mind at the last minute, and glad I did. I like the black and gold idea, just be careful on not going overboard on the gold, IMHO of course. Have you considered black rims with the stainless spokes? It would be killer.

Love the bike, keep it up.

Thanks guys. i do plan to do the powder coat swap with TPUSA for black rims and hubs some day. If i don't do that i'll get mag wheels. problem is i don't know where to find any.

lance , i really dig your bike. I have some questions though.
1. Where is your battery? i want to do the air box removal and battery re locate, but i don't know where to put all the battery and wiring.

2. where did you find your rims. I love them.

3. what cowling is that? it looks like it is a solo suite and has a compartment.

4. No mirrors? do you just head turn all the time? i'd feel lost without mine.

As for the color, I really wish i could test stuff before i pay for it. there will only be 3-4 things in gold. Really other than a few little things it will be pretty black'd out.

The other option that has come up is something like a midnight purple. Black normally, but purple in the sun. I think the gold and black parts would still pop nicely.

PS, it's going to be a challenge to get all my dreams into reality. It'll probably be a long, budget restrained build. It's going to be fun though. I love this bike. If i'd have gotten the 675 like i origionally wanted there wouldn't be nearly as much stuff i could do to and with it.

I agree with Lance (Buckeyebike) (who's bill?) to much gold looks...well... ghetto. Like you wind, not a fan of metal flake. Also, no fender makes the bike look unfinished, JMO.
I myself will be going through another color change this winter and black will be in the mix, that's all I'll say for now.
Oh and BTW another shameless pic Lance.....really?:p

#24 ·
i don't know where i got Bill. Maybe i was on drugs. I thought i saw a bill someplace. maybe i was getting you mixed up with him.

Oh well..

So maybe i should quote my last post with Lance not bill?

I don't mind shamless pics...so long as you guys don't mind me steeling ideas lol

I cant modify my first post. Is that normal? I can edit others, but not my first few. Is there a limit to how many times you can edit, or a time limit?

TB- I am shameful ;) Just got back from picking up a BMW G650X Challenge set up for off-road riding, can't wait :D

Wind-

1. the battery box is under the seat and part of the airbox eliminator
2. the rims are forged alloy Carrozzerias
3. the seat is a Corbin Smuggler (has a small trunk in the back)
4. the mirror is not visible, and is a Rizoma Class

:)

Thanks for the info

Is it a kit? That's what I want to know. I desire to run with exposed filters, but don't want the battery and other wiring seen. Wanna take some close ups for me. Pretty please :)
