So today I'm filling up and the stupid gas shutoff thing fails, about a half cup of gas overflows over the tank. I frantically wipe down everything and then ride home. When I get there I realize that gas got under the tank badges, so off I go to Sears to get the "Secure Torx" bit set so I can take the badges off and clean underneath.

I'm home an hour later and am sort of amazed to find out how wet it is under those badges, it's like the badges allow gas to flow in at the top but prevent it from flowing out the bottom. The rubber under one badge has gotten soft, but hopefully it'll be dried out after tomorrow.

I'm lucky Sears had those bits in stock. I think if I'd let the bike sit a couple days the tank paint would have come off along with the badges!

So two lessons:

1) Never trust the shutoff mechanism at the gas station
2) Go to Sears and get those secure Torx bits before this happens to you!

Time to go rewax that tank...

I recently installed Heritage badges on my tank, and used stainless phillips head screws this time. I stripped the torx head on one of the stockers during an earlier removal.

Joe, I've got some Torx heads but your post sounds like there is a different set of Torx heads (?) What specifically do you need for this?

Thanks,
Kerry

They are torx security type with a pin in the center. You need the driver with a hole in the tip.

Yes, the "secure torx drivers" are just oddball enough that you can't get them at any chain auto parts store. Fortunately I remembered reading on this forum that you can get them at Sears.
