Sunday my wife and I went to Sears to buy the Craftsman Motorcycle/ATV Jack, so we can do our own oil changes and other basic maintenance.
Just before getting in line she wisely suggested we back up, go home, account for what we have and identify what we need. We will then return to Sears and take care of everything in one stop. I love my wife!
After looking at my cluttered toolbox, I realized we have mostly standard type sockets and such. And naturally we need metric to work on the Bonnie/Thruxton.
What tools (type/size) do you suggest we get?
Our list currently includes:
- Proper tool box (to organize the mess we now have)
- Motorcycle jack
- Mechanics seat (with wheels & tool tray)
- 18mm thin walled socket, 12 pt deep
- Magnetic bowl
- Torque wrench (size?)
- Oil filter wrench (size?)
What else do we need? What have you found useful?
Thanks!
Randy DTFR

It's the new "Washing Machine" that you're going to buy for your wife because as you said earlier..
"I love my wife!"

True enough! There will be a price to pay...
But, she loves me enough to let me spend $$$$ on tools... I'm a lucky guy!

When I did my east coast "tour" a few years ago, I decided to stock up with the ultimate travelling tool kit to cover most things I would need if I had an issue.
From memory, here's what I got:
3/8 socket ratchet driver handle
3/8 socket screwdriver handle
3/8 socket extension (med)
3/8 metric sockets 5mm to 14mm
metric allen wrench set (ball end)
metric t-handle allen wrenches (3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5,5, 6mm)
6" adjustable wrench
vise grips
metric combination wrenches 8mm to 15mm (8pt)
needle nose plier
slip joint plier
"pump style" plier
wire cutter
electrians wire cutter/stripper
telescoping magnet
leatherman
multi tip screwdriver (2 phillips, 2 slotted)
tie wraps (2 sizes)
electrical tape
15' wire
etc, etc, till you feel comfortable you have what you might need.
This would be a good starting place.

If it was me I'd leave out the t-handle allen wrenches. No need to carry 2 types of the same tool. If torque is the problem then you can carry a short metal tube (about 5 or 6 inches) which can easily slip over one end of the allen wrench to be used as an extension. If you want you can even skip the tube and just use a box end wrench as an Allen wrench extension, it's just a tad tricky but once you get the idea of how to use it it's quite handy.

3300 is the bosch oil filter for the bonneville twins. Once you have the filter you can select the correct filter wrench at the same time.-Good luck T1
