It comes down to this.......

Full face or open?
The basic decision of a full face versus open face helmet is a matter of personal choice. The debate revolves around the risk of skull base fractures caused by an impact to the chin region of a full face helmet. Reviews of crash risk rates suggest that while the overall risk of facial injury is greatly reduced by a full-faced helmet, the risk of skull base fractures may be increased ([EEVC, 1993] p 49).

I think what I learned is this:

-Wear a helmet
-Ride lots
-Ride sober
-Tell the wife to get her own bike

I knew all this already but now I have more ammunition to try to get my wife to ride. Alterior motive? Yup...another steed in the shed.

Points worth remembering:

When someone describes how their chinbar hit the deck and saved their face, remember that the chinbar protrudes significantly further than your chin (unless you're Desperate Dan).
I've just put on my open face helmet and tried to bang my chin on the desk. If I open my mouth wide, I can just touch my chin on the desk with the edges of the helmet hard down against the surface. Older designs probably create greater exposure.
A full face helmet is significantly heavier than an open face, so it may hit the road in a situation when your natural instinct to hold your head up would have succeeded with the open face.
The extra weight of the full face helmet could, in some circumstances, be the last straw that breaks the riders neck.
On a statistical sample of one serious crash, in which I was knocked uncoscious and hit the bonnet of a car, a grass bank and the road (in that order), I had several marks on my open helmet but none on my face.
I also favour the awareness of my immediate environment (especially my bike) which the open face helmet offers.
I must admit to being biased from an early experience with a full face helmet in the 70's. I sneezed violently while riding, causing an alarming loss of visibility! Sneezing in an open face helmet allows me to get back at the drivers who wash their windscreens when I'm behind them.

Shoot me.

I 'choose' to wear a full face because of the comfort it provides. The added bonus is a face still intact, while a few face shields have been hit with:

bark from off a lumber truck
a bird
'something' that left a mess beyond which I could barely see
pebbles
blasting sand
rain drops
that steep hill I slid down face first at Nevada City
cigarette butts from a car window (lit?)

...... want me to continue?
I actually wish I had the balls to run half hat & goggles. But every time I do (just to look 'tough-n-fine') I am made to feel...... scared. My bad.

Full face or open?
Here's my opinion. If you haven't polished asphalt yet choose full face. If you already did choose open one. Why? After all we are before or after polishing. I had full face helmet recently but can't put him on anymore, I'm after (it happend in November). My bike and helmet gone to hell and now I have open face on Thrux

Fattrat,

First, I am not trying to tell anyone what to do, just adding my opinion and experience to the list.

I also feel more 'scared' in my open face helmet. I think that's a good thing. If theres something to be scared of, I want to know about it and be scared of it. I believe that bikes should be noisy, cars should have a spike in the middle of the steering wheel rather than an airbag and dangerous things generally should feel dangerous.
We would all ride more carefully if we had no helmets at all. Why? Are we any happier to crash just because we are wearing helmets? We all choose our own acceptable level of risk and that is based on how dangerous things feel. If we make things feel safer, we take greater risks. We need to be careful to achieve the correct balance of actual risk vs. percieved risk. I feel my open face helmet gives the correct balance for me. Your full face helmet probably gives the correct balance for you.
I guess my point is that we can't all live by the same rules.
