Is it fast, no.

Is it fun, yes

Buy according to your priorities.

Of course you could buy a Thunderbird Sport, mod it and have the best of both worlds. :-D

One thing about the Thrux is that the 70HP on offer is useable power delivered in a delightfully linear fashion - that's why it's so much fun to ride.
It works superbly with a smooth, fluid riding style.
A good rider will put many sportbike 'pretenders' to shame on it.

The Thunderbird Sport is not a fast bike in modern terms. A GSXR750 would annihilate it.

Of course, but we were talking about cafe-styled retros.

I agree with you about the Thruxton, but I really like the Thunderbird Sport as well.

It is also worth mentioning that the above TBS is a bit hotter than most, both performance-wise and appearance-wise. It may not keep up with a Gixxer in most instances, but I sure as hell wouldn't line up next to it expecting to give it much of a run on my Thruxton.
