Just did mine last weekend. I bought a used Thruxton fender on ebay and used a dremel tool to cut it after I outlined the shape with pin striping tape. I wanted to keep my stock fender just in case I decide to go back to stock.

I originally decided that I wanted to change the tailight but found that the tailight did not look right and did not want to destroy the original for the same reason as yours so decided to change rear guard using an Airtech smooth bobbed. I used this one as it has the molding to fit up exactly to our bikes.

It is made of fibreglass but I found that it was a bit flimsy so I glassed in some brackets for strength.

I left it longer than the others shown above as I prefer the more classic look but it wouldnt take much to cut the Airtech one down to what you prefer.

I like the way Houston08 has shaped his guard,
but I think the standard guard looks ok once you loose the standard lights.
remove too much and it unbalances the look unless you do something with the front guard.

Ever since I saw this mod it beat the FEK hands down. I really dig my rear fender as is, but if it was was a little 'thinner' then that would be perrrfect. Every time I spot one for sale in the classifieds someone beats me to the buy!

Holy cow houston08thruxton you did a great job on that mod.
I wish I had waited on my FEK after seeing that. Bitchen!

Maybe this weekend will be spent on giving the OEM fender that I took off, a little trim.

Thanx for the motivation.

I felt the same way. All the FEK's have a flat, plastic under seat plate and I wanted just a little more protection from road spray. Plus it's a lot more gratifying doing it yourself.

Thanks for the compliment! Go for it on yours! It's not difficult to do. I used just one cutting wheel with my dremel for the cut, then I used a new one to grind the edge smooth.
