Unhappy Vandalized how do I polish a stater cover

Well my girlfriends ex showed up some time in the middle of the night and kicked my 05 thruxton over. Childish I know. The brand new stater cover has a few scratches. I am curiouse if i can sand them out and polish it and how exactly to do it? The laquer coating on these things sucks as is. Thats why I just replaced it salt water ate it up. And when I remove it how do I avoid damaging the stater? Need help!

depends on how deep the scratches are. There are a bunch of great threads on how to polish the covers, assuming they aren't too bad.

If you can prove it was him, I'd just file charges. Its a minor charge, but it will let you show police records, which will be helpful if abuse continues.

a lot of us here have polished out engine covers. it takes a lot of time, patience and elbow grease (with the aid of a bench grinder with buffing/polishing wheels or a drill with wheels attached) but the results speak for themselves. if you do a search there are plenty of threads on here regarding polishing the covers.

i've had some really deep gouges/scratches on my alternator cover (down twice believe it or not) and you cant even tell. just take your time and be patient. i used a bastard file to get the gouges and deep scratches out first. i've also since polished the kick plate since taking this photo and it came out just as nice as the engine covers.

Cool

Ok talked to a metal polishing shop they said hit the scratches with 350 grit orbital sander. Then use some 3 stage polish. Got it all for around 20 bucks. Should save me about 300.

I feel for you man... You have WAY more self control than I do.
Post some before and after pics once you're done. Good Luck and keep a steady head.

You might want to pull the cases and do the set. It's nearly impossible (or was for me) to match the OEM brushed finish.

Takes some time, you can polish the entire case, and no miss match issue, and looks nicer IMHO. And with some blue magic from time to time, polished cases stay looking good.

I thing gaskets are about 8.00 each.

The cases can be fixed. I would be paying a visit to the ex's new boyfriend in intensive care if you really know it was him. Same scenario with a hamster hung hater new boyfriend happened to me once almost 20 years ago. Don't let it end well for him.
