Got an email the other day from an old childhood friend of my father's , Tijoriwala. This guy taught me how to ride about 18 years ago. I always heard stories about him. My father's friends called him by a nickname which translates to the fastest man from the gutter (gutter is slang for the south at the time so it should be 'fastest man from the south'.)*
The picture attached was taken in 1973 and shows him on his favorite steed, which.. as the story goes.. he had recently acquired after beating "a rich kid" in a 4am, 10 km road race through the streets of bombay. Tijoriwala had put up 2k rupees and the hopped up 350 enfield he was riding at the time. Not a bad win.
I had heard this story thousands of times while growing up but was ignorant about the magnitude of it because,until recently, I was unaware of the magnitude of the bike won.
