Helmet thoughts

Hi all,

I am still fairly new to the cafe racer style motorcycles. I have a 04 thruxton bought the past Saturday and was looking into an open face helmet.

I've never owned an open face helmet and wanted to get some opinions on it. I like the looks but safety wise don't know if its worth risking my life.

Also what are some great brands that give the vintage look but still will do its job.

HI
Hopefully this will not kick off another debate on open vs full face.
I know there are many makers of cool looking open face.
Davida is one that jumps to mind. Here is another site to give you a start.

Personally i like the comfort and safety of a full face but each to his own.

I went with the arai, nice looking and has that retro look.
Good luck with whatever you decide, after all it's your noggin
Cheers John.

I never owned an open face before I got the Thrux but I have to admit it just fits the bike so I got an AGV Dragon. Doesn't work for me on long rides on NY freeways though. Truck debris, rain, etc. OK for short rides if you don't mind risking your pretty face. Below about 55 degrees, I automatically go with the full face.

Thanks for those sites. I've always wore full face helmets but love the look of the open face on a cafe racer. Just doesn't seem worth the risk though.

With the Thruxton i had to go with an open face helmet.
I have a davida jet(Gloss Black)and aviator T2 Goggles for useing on the motorway(freeway)but most of the time i wear protective sun glasses and have the goggles on the helmet at the ready.I always wear a bluff over my mouth to keep the flys and other flying crap out.As for being safe.......i don't know, don't fall off i guess.

Check out the Auther Fulmer line of open face. You can use goggles or get a screw kit to attach a flat shield.

Thanks for all the info you guys. I'm going to go with the shoei rf1000 for long rides and a open face for short local rides.

Hi Ristb, if you want an appropriate style helmet without the dangers of open face I'd recommend you get an Arai Phil Read Replica, looks super old school with full face goodness... Mike Hailwood Replica, Joey Dunlop Replica or Robert Dunlop Replica would be great choices too!!

There are some great retro style full face helmets out there if you have a look about!

The Momo fighter helmets looks awesome. I've always wanted to buy one but Im not gonna risk smacking up my face so I just wear a Shoei Multitec. Flip up face helmet, so I get the best of both worlds.
