Bonnie T-100 missing and sputtering

Hey guys,

I'm going to Dallas, Tx next week to visit my best friend and work on his 2006 Bonnie T-100. He's been stockpiling bits and pieces knowing I'm coming over and we can hang out b.s'ing and wrenching.

Today he calls me and tells me his Bonnie left him stranded a mile from his house. Here's what happened:

" I was on my way to work when it started running rough, missing and idling poorly. It starts fine and runs ok for a few seconds and then starts to miss. It gets even worse when you give it some gas.

I can start the motor and it will run for a minute of so, and then it start to miss, sputter and miss then die. I can restart the bike immediately and it will go through the same progression just a little faster.

I have checked the spark plug wires, put a little more fresh gas in the tank and checked the vacuum hoses on the carburetor made sure there are no leaks.

Only 2,000 miles on her."

I'm thinking maybe the gas vent hose is pinched (???) and depriving the carb of gas...
I was also thinking it could be that since he allows such a long time between rides, maybe the gas has deteriorated and clogging the carb...what's got me is the fact that it works well cold, then starts acting up.
What do you guys think?
Oh, and my buddy is an OCD mess!!! He's not gonna sleep unless we figure this out and I don't get there 'till Saturday.

THANKS!!

I had a similar problem on my old pre EFI Bonny - you have not said but have you had the airbox removed and an AI kit installed.

These were the source of my problems - wasn't too hard to fix but they made the bike cough and splutter like what you mentoned and idle eratically. Few things probably came a bit loose...

Bad things happen in Pairs?

My 2005 Thrux started this same problem coming home from work Sunday. Just got done passing and was on the throttle a little and he started sputtering, back firing, missing for no apparent reason.
He idles fine but when you give him gas it starts.

Yesterday morning I dumped the fuel out of the tank and replaced with new gas, checked fuel flow... no problem there. Checked Air Filter (Stock Box) OK. Checked ignition connections and they seem fine. AI has been removed from bike. Will be pulling plugs later today to check them out.

I just put a Service Manual on order (as I've only had the bike a few months) but it coming from across the pond and will take a few weeks. A friend is lending me his T100 Service Manual tomorrow till mine get here.

Any thoughts on where to start trouble shooting. I'm sure it is Fuel or Ignition related.

Thanks Nick... now how to you check to see if your pickup or ignition coil is bad? or is it a case of "replace it and see'?

Edit: Thanks for the reply on the other thread. You rock!

Getting a service manual today. Will be checking the Carbs first but I'm leaning towards an ignition (coil) problem.

Are Nology ProFire Coils and Cables a good replacement (2005 Thrux)? Any other mods need to be done if these are put on (rejet or anything?)

Thanks for all the help.

I have a similar problem that started yesterday. I haven't ridden my 2004 Thrux for about 6 weeks (I've been out of town). Yesterday it fired up fine, but after it warmed up and I closed the choke, it was popping and backfiring constantly on deceleration. Also when I revved it and then closed the throttle, it took a couple of seconds for the revs to die down. AI is removed and it has aftermarket pipes. Bike has 5,000 miles on it, and until yesterday it ran perfectly well. I adjusted the idle screw but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Thanks

Eureka!!! My buddy and I worked on the airbox removal kit this weekend and installed some free flowing exhaust pipes. Since we had to rejet, we took apart the carbs and gave them a good cleaning. MAN, WERE THEY FILTHY!!!! Varnishing and gritty all over. We also emptied out the remaining fuel and put in fresh gas. I've read from several sources that gas can degrade in as little as 4~6 weeks and really screw up the carbs. It's scary all the crap you read about the effects of ethanol once the separation process starts (google it...you'll be happy you did.)

We were kinda scared about messing with the carbs but we followed all the technical guides available from Jenks, the Haynes manual and everything was PERFECT! It started on the first tick and sounds amazing. Pulls real hard through all the gears. I have no idea how much power was gained but between the clean carbs, exhaust and no airbox is feels great. No more sewing machine sounds... I can't wait to get back to Florida and get this done to my Thrux.

Keep you gas fresh guys! Lesson learned.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Didn't want to try that myself so I had an ambulance pick up Hamilton and take him to the Hospital. The Dr did the respiratory surgery and said he was feeling better. Wanted to keep him over night to monitor (ride him some more) to make sure everything went well.

Leaving in a few minutes to go pick him up.

I hope you find him in tip-top shape. I'll be honest: there's no way I would've done this by myself. My buddy was a seconde pair of eyes that allowed me to work and ask questions and describe what I was doing just to make sure it all made sense. Now that I've done it once I have no qualms about doing it to mine. It really is easy but I completely understand why you'd take him to a "Dr."
Where in Fl are you anyway? I never run into anyone around here (Brandon, Valrico, Plant City, Tampa...)
