latest tail light mod
I lost one of the plastic plugs from the frame tube... looked like a good place to stick a flasher! I am using the Run/Stop/Turn signals combined, I bought some 3/4" light sockets and trimmed them to fit in the tube, and a red LED bulb. about $20 for the fix.
I had the tail lights mounted by the rear springs, I thought if I ever used saddle bags I would have to move them anyway.
jt...

Looks great. Much cleaner look than almost all of the FEKs out there. Where did you get the lights from and any pics on how it was done???

I got the 3/4" light sockets and 1157 red LED lights at AutoZone. I also installed two white LEDs under the fender to light the license plate.
The light sockets are flared, so i trimmed the flare off using tin snips.
I ran two wires through a hole I drilled in the tube, just inside the battery box. the wires are of course protected so they don't chafe.
Tied the two (+) wire leads on the light socket together, and spliced to one of the the longer wires in the tubing.
I taped the ground wire to the outside of the socket and wrapped enough tape around the socket to fit tight in the tube.

It looks great... in VA, having the plate in front of the tire is illegal, so its not an option for me.
How do you feel about the brightness? I tried those 1157 LED bulbs as a replacement in my tail light and it was easily half the brightness as the regular bulb that is in there, even with the brake depressed. What about viewing angle from behind, can someone in a large SUV see your brake lights?

I think they are certainly bright enough as the bulbs are not shielded by a lens cover. I'll have to get behind someone and ask them what it looks like. I am not sure about the plate location in Texas, I have been pulled over a lot and it hasn't been an issue...yet.

how did you wire up the run/stop/turn signals? After market? or can all the wires just be run together? I love the idea, and it looks really damn good!

I think this is going to be my next mod. I found the lights at Autozone along with the sockets. The lights cost around $16.75 each and the sockets about $3.00 each. Not a terribly expensive mod considering the cost of a FEK.
This is one of those mods that might need a sticky!
