Rocker box reassembly question?

Hi,

I have a 71 bonneville.

Does anyone have trick to installing the rocker spindles without damaging the o-ring. I do not have the D2221 tool.

Thanks for all replies.

I just did this job this weekend.
- When you buy o-rings, get at least 3, as you are sure to wreck one. This is what my local shop told me and they were exactly right.

- I (cringe!) chamfered the hole a mm or two with a triangular-grinding bit on my drill.

-I found that the shaft should go in pretty easily by hand nearly all the way through, if it is blocked/ stuck, it is likely one of the washers not aligned. resist the urge to hammer it.
- The last 1/2 inch is pretty tight, I found that as long as the threaded other end is sticking out a little, putting a washer and nut on and tightening (pulling it) sucked it down nice and straight. Keep adding/stacking washers so you do not run out of thread, you will know when your all the way in/seated. Lots of lube.
This seemed to do the trick for me.

Thanks for the reply.

I just got it done with it today. I took a 1/2 round file and just knocked the edge off the hole and made sure everything was lined up and lightly tapped it home. It's not leaking (just rode it), so far so good.

I was beginning to wonder if my problems are too bizzare, cause no one answered my last 2 questions about a gear oil leak I have around the cam plate quadrant spindle. I'll tear into that this winter.

Thanks again for the reply.

Your problems are not bizzare, they are completely normal.

Some of us were out riding, wrenching in the shop, watching F1 and/or NASCAR, or just too lazy to respond.

I will not say which of several I am guilty of.
