front brake 72 t00r

Hi folks, new here as i just acquired a 72 daytona basket caes. The assembilly is going well but not sure what front cable i need. The cable goes in at the bottom of the hub and comes out towards the back of the fender. Most other ones i see the cable goes straight down the fork. Is there a name for this brake hub? Also would any one happen to have a wiring fiche for this bike? I ordered a haynes manual for it but it has not arrived yet.

Hi Slim..

The only year bike that I can recall using that setup was the 1968 model. Could be that the factory used some old ones if they were out of the new style, but that's pretty far-fetched. Probably just one that was added by the previous owner. Some folks think that that was the best brake as the cable pulled straight back on the arms. Who knows? So, get a cable for the '68 model and you should be ok. I think that the same cable is used on the 650's as well.

Yep, the conical hub is a better brake.

Here is a link to a very good article by Victory Library on the comical brake hub.

Actually, the conical front brake was used only on the 650-750 range of bikes from 71 on until the disc ones came out. The 500cc T-100 models used the earlier twin leading shoe setup until the end. I don't think a conical brake would fit on the earlier style front end without some modifications.

front brake

Jim is correct. The disk brake was introduced on the 750 twins and triples in 1973. Fitting a TLS brake to an earlier model is doable, using the triple trees makes it pretty easy and using the whole front end is preferable. Putting disk brakes on an early model is pretty difficult unless you use the whole front end. You can use just the triple trees but there are many mods to be done to make it work.

Been there, done that, got the check.

After further research i have to agree with Jim that it is a 68 model hub which is fine with me but i could not find a cable with a brake switch in it for this drum. All is good though as i fabbed my own cable up with some spare parts i had kicking around.
