Manual advanced / retarded timing question.

This may be difficult to put in to words, but I am sure you will understand and I am sure there maybe some different answers.

In what position should the handle bar lever be in when advancing the cam ring when doing the magneto timing?

Or maybe put differently, when the handle bar lever is cranked or pulled so as to rotate the cam ring in a clockwise direction as seen from the points side. What is the timing position now? Is this advanced or retarded?

Thanks

BB

Manual ignition timing

Hi BB, The ignition timing will be fully advanced when the cam-ring is all the way clock-wise.

Yeah Mike, that’s what I also say but some of the racing guys are telling me different. That is to say when doing the timing with a manual advance / retard lever (not auto advance that must be wedged in advanced position), the handle bar lever must be cranked open forcing or pulling the cam ring fully clock wise (advanced) and then the points rotated until the points are about to separate and the magneto gear fitted in this position. Is the timing now correct? Then the handle bar lever returned to the normal position. Is this correct?

So when starting the bike in what position must the handle bar lever be?

Thanks
BB

Watch the direction the spindle turns. To retard it, move the cam in the same direction.

Yep, spot on you hold the mag in the fully advanced position crank the engine to the correct setting using a degree disc, all depending on model, and then turn the points untill they just start to open and fit the drive gear to the end of the mag taper. Once drive gear is fitted turn engine back past ignition point then slowly turn engine back to ignition point and recheck points and timing degree.

Pre-unit T100 37º B.T.D.C

Pre-unit T110, TR6 35º B.T.D.C.

Pre-unit T120 39º B.T.D.C

On some 6T's and 5T's the ignition is set fully retarded.

Your timing will now be correct for high speed running, remember when starting just retard the ignition, once engine has started just push the lever untill it runs sweet. It takes a while but soon you will know when to adjust the timing as you ride along. It comes as natural as right foot gear change ! ! ! !

NO - NO -NO!!! Let's put a spanner in the works.

The question was: - In what position should the handle bar lever be in when advancing the cam ring when doing the magneto timing? Manual. Or perhaps I should ask where is the advanced position of the cam ring in relation to the handle bar lever. I don’t know how to put it more simply. Surely you know what I am getting at.

All magnetos are different and timed differently depending on bike etc. This is for a K2F magneto on a triumph. Remember some magnetos advance / retard pick-ups on the cam may be situated differently, i.e. as seen from the left or points side of the engine, some (on K2F magneto) have the cable pick-up on the left of the points other on the right and where ever else.

So when the handle bar lever is cranked, the left side attaching cable to the magneto cam ring with the motor rotating in the correct direction forward or clock wise the cam ring will be drawn upwards or clock wise, where as if it was situated on the right side of the points it would be drawn upwards or rotated upwards and be going anti clock wise. And so on.

My understanding that the correct position for handle bar lever is to be in the neutral position or (better known as the slack wire advanced position) that is to say that there is no tension on the cable (the cam ring is in the neutral position and not rotating clock wise). When the handle bar lever is cranked the timing is being retarded. That ties in with what Red 1959 says.

Difficult to believe but this is the same answer that I got from 3 different classic racers. Let’s hear from some others.

How do you hold the mag in the fully advanced position? And where is this position?
