alternator rotor crank nut T140v

hi
any clues as to how to lock engine in order to tighten crank nut on alternator side? i found it had worked loose and rotor was flapping around. lock washer used was star type not tab type as shown in manual. will replacewith the latter.
to hold engine the best i've managed is to put in gear and stand on back brake. fairly successful.
can i use tdc hole or is this verboten?
thanks in advance

Top gear with the foot brake.

You better have a close look at that rotor to make sure the outer casting with the magnet is still firmly adhered to the inner hub.

Clamp the hub in a vice with some washers on either side to shim up a gap between the outer rotor and the vice jaws, then try to slightly rotate the outer section with a pair of wide-jaw "channel-lock" pliers and see if you have any play. If so, you need to replace the rotor or it can fail with serious damage resulting to your primary and perhaps your left leg.

How to lock motor

Take a piece of rope, the soft stuff. remove sparkplugs, roll motor till pistons are down, stuff the rope in the plug hole, leaving part of rope hanging out of hole. Roll motor over till piston comes to a rest aginst said rope. Remove rope before starting might not be in the book, but I did'nt read it all........
