i have a friend working on my transmission ( i won't mess with em ) he can't seem to get it to work right , but then again he doesn't really mess with 5 speeds often , he says he thinks the outer transmission cover is the wrong one , says it's for a four speed transmission and thats why it's not shifting right , think that could be it ? or is there not any difference between the 4 and 5 speed outter covers ? i'm building the bike so i've never ridden it or anything , if there is a difference in covers i don't know how i ended up with a 4 speed cover .

The covers themselves are interchangable.

The plungers and the shifter shaft they ride in are not.

On my bikes, the 5 speed plungers measure 1.875" oal and the 4 sp 1.950".

The 5 speed shaft has a slightly different shape and stops against the cover with the plunger roughly 3/16" shy of center on the guide plate opening , the 4 speed will allow the plunger to go all the way to center.

Hope this helps. I spent 3 days and probably 25 dis and reassemblys before I finally figured it out....

Gearboxes can be kinda tricky.
Can you run through all the gears shifting it manually (without the outer cover in place)?

before i took it to my friend i could get neutral , first , and second , sometimes third , and then a bunch of fake shifts , i could also be in third and click all the way down to first in one click . i don't know what it's like now , he just says he's been messing with it all week and can't get it timed right because he thinks it's got a 4 speed cover on it . i'm just checking to see if thats a possibility and it would seem that it is

If you can't shift through all gears in proper sequence without the outer cover in place, don't even bother installing it.

I'm not a Triumph expert by any means, but it sounds like the problem may be in the gearbox itself rather than the outer cover.
