You'll need to install a degree wheel to time it accurately, but you can always use the old "stick in the hole" method to get close enough to start the engine, then time it closer by ear and monitor your plug condition to fine-tune.
1. Check your book for the length of the stroke
2. Divide that figure by 180 (NOT 360)
3. Multiply the result by "X" (degrees BTDC for timing), write down that length, somewhere between 1/4 - 1/2" I would GUESS
4. Get a thin rod or screwdriver and stick it in the Right cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke (both valves closed)
5. Make a mark on the rod right where it touches the edge of the spark plug hole
6. Make a second mark on the rod the distance as calculated in step 3
7. Rotate the engine through another cycle and as you are 1/4 turn from approaching TDC again, insert the rod back in the hole
8. SLOWLY rotate until the second mark aligns with the top of the spark plug hole. You will be VERY close.
