Michael, the cam timing will PROBABLY be at one of the keyways BUT.... it could be a tooth either way depending on the setting for that cam. What I would suggest is, set the degree disc on the crankshaft (as per Lutz) at TDC and then locate the intermediate wheel on the keyway adjacent to the timing mark, do this for the inlet first.
Set the valve lash at 0.020" and read out what the figures are when the lash gap has JUST closed up. You want firures in degrees, inlet opens (34) before TDC. Inlet closes (55) after bottom dead centre, when the lash JUST reappears. Repeat for exhaust but you are looking for exhaust opens (55), exhaust closes (34).
Roy.

Cam Timing

As someone has already pointed out you really need to know what cams are fitted.
If you haven't removed the gear wheels from the cam shafts then DON'T as you have three keyways and only one is correct.
If you have the Triumph [i]hot[i] cams fitted Nº E 3134 the cam timing is 36º-56º inlet 56º-36º exhaust with .020" tappet gap, as per Roy's instructions.
Once you have the valve timing correct you will have to re-set the tappets to the correct settings.

Good luck Mike T
