What do your plugs look like? Have you replaced them as well?

When you say you replaced wires - which ones?

Have you checked the bullet connectors under the tank that connect the points wires to the loom towards the coils?

Might be worth checking the wires (Black/Yellow & Black/white) going to the points, where they pass through the rear of the timing case into the points well - check for wear on the wire coverings and shorting to frame. Also check the connectors around the points, and for "deposits" and shorting around the points pillar.

Hope this helps.

sputtering bonneville

the plugs were new a week ago,,,noticed the left one is black,,,so i assume thats the one thats been missfiring ,,i was thniking it could be where the wires pass thru the case going to the points,,,not sure if there are connectors under the gastank ,,all connectors under the seat to the coils are tight ,,is there connectors in the taped up wiring under the tank ?,,,also i see one of the connectors at the points is missing the one tang that goes over the points spring,,i tryed to make sure the one tag left was touching the spring,,,for a connection,,,,was going to replace it,,,but i havent any connectors like that ,,,,

Service and charge your battery, then test it with a battery tester. Sounds like battery issues to me.

Then again, it could be ANYTHING; long distance troubleshooting is no fun.

YOu could be getting too much fuel in the cylinder with excessive carbon. I had a sputter issue, and it was a flooding carb, and nothing to do with ignition! Just another thing to check (After I had replaced plugs and wires)

Nice to hear another problem solved.

By the way, I've seen stranger things around here. Nothing suprises me about these bikes. They keep you on your toes.
