triumph 1966 thunderbird question

hello all, i am obviously new here so work with me
My boss just bought a 66' thunderbird for $1000. He wants me to find out info on the bike about restoring it an such. My question is do you guys know where to find any info on these bikes? I have found a local shop in MA that specializes in triumphs and plan on talking to them. I have not seen the bike so I cannot comment on the condition, but I assume due to the price that it is not in the best shape. If i have the vin where can i use it to find out the original specs of the bike? anything would help thanks. I will try to answer any questions as best as I can thanks again.

Re up, if the local guy is Don Hutchinson in Wakefield. He'll ahve all the answers to your questions. Some people think he is a little expensive, but he's always steered me straight.

re-up... i believe that was a 650cc thunderbird..the last year for the thunderbird(6t) ..it had an eyebrow badge ..knee pad rubbers..i think that was the year triumph lost the bathtub skirt...tank colors were grenadier red over alaskan white..this was a unit 650cc with a 12 volt system..(im still not sure what the differance between a unit and non unit construction)..i dont know what specifically your seeking..but i can recommend a few books...."Triumph motorcycle buyers guide"...."Triumph twin restoration "...both by Roy Bacon..and "Triumph in America"..by Brook and Gaylin........hope this helps.....Tom

tnsen -

Pre-Unit = "D" serial numbers = Separate crankcase, transmission and primary lumps

Unit = "DU" serial numbers = Integrated engine casting.
