Roper711,
Seems like everyone else is sleeping right now, so I'll bite...

In answer to you question (only a little flippancy here):

1 - depends on local laws (eg noise polution)
2 - depends on how you get on with your neighbours
3 - depends what sort of fire/heat-proof boots you (and any passengers) wear
4- enough to reach the mufflers

I reckon I'd be pretty safe in saying you've moved away from the standard exhaust system with balance pipe and reverse cone mufflers - probably to straight through pipes. I'd also think your question has more to do with engine tuning - correct?

I would think that once you go to open pipes (thus no back pressure from mufflers), the exact length doesn't matter that much, and comes back to personal preference for style and safety. Certainly I'd want any exhaust gases coming out beyong where my feet rest on pegs, or where my legs go when I stop. Tuning may have to be a little richer.

I've run Triumphs with straight pipes and the carb needles raised to the top setting with no ill effects, but they are LOUD.

I've run both downpipes and scrambler pipes. I've seen some cut shorter on choppers and specials, and haven't heard of burnt valve issues; so I'd say about 30" minimum length per pipe is about what the scrambler pipes measure (more or less).
