78 Tiger clutch questions

I am replacing the clutch plates on my 78 Tiger. Upon inspection, the drive plates were slightly warped. Should the new ones be soaked in oil before installation? Also I want to inspect the rubbers in the shock absorber, but am having a hard time removing the three screws that hold the cover plate on. Any ideas? Thanks to all for your advice. Bill

DON'T SOAK the plates. Who's are they and what friction material are they fitted with?
Use an impact screw driver to release the screws if they are the countersunk ones, only take off the BACK PLATE, leave the front one alone.
If you have the later shock with the 3 setscrews going right through to the front, you will need to grind off the excess thread before trying to screw them out, that will then scrap the front plate....... probably. Easiest way is to just replace the whole unit.

Thanks again, Roy. I don't know what type of material the friction plates are. I have not received them yet. The factory manual (over) simply states " unscrew the three bolts which serve to retain the shock absorber plate, and lever the plate free". The slot in these bolts are quite wide and the heads don't have much meat on them for a screwdriver to hold on to. Is the unit pressed on? I removed the large nut in the center, but still cannot remove the entire unit, so I don't have access to the rear plate. I figured I should inspect the rubbers while I am in there, and replace if necessary.

Good morning........... well it's raining here! Moving on, the shock absorber should be a GOOD fit on the clutch hub and it sounds like yours is. You will need a puller to remove the hub from the gearbox main shaft and the whole clutch assembly will come off in one. Then you can press the hub out of the shock. puller part # 61-3766.
Replace the rollers and the steel backed, copper thrust bearing regardless of condition.

Hello Roy...I took your advice from my initial post about my bike jumping into gear when cold. I replaced all plates, changed primary oil, and made all adjustments according to the factory manual. Clutch is now fine....works smooth as silk. Unfortunately, my problems are more extensive. I have first and neutral, but the old girl just won't shift into second or above. I managed to get to second , but then, the gearbox just locks up. I think dismantling the entire gearbox might be a little much for me to handle, and I would not know what to look for. It looks like my summer riding is done. I really appreciated your wisdom....Thanks, Bill

Hi Roy
I just might be in luck. A woman that I work with has family (in Laws) that own a local Honda dealership. One of the guys in the service dept. is an old timer who is very familiar with English bikes and says he can handle it. When I have time over the next week , I'll load it onto the pickup and bring it down. I will keep you posted. You were right on with the clutch info, and that went well. I live in South Seaville, NJ,USA. If you are ever in the area, dinner and pints are on me! Thanks, and good riding.
