New Triumph Owner With Misc. Questions

Hi,

Total noob here... I'd like to start off by stating that I am really new to wrenching on motorcycles in general. I have recently purchased a 67 T100c (first bike), and have a 2 part question.

1. I don't have a choke lever located on my bars, but rather a choke lever assembly on my Amal carb. I've searched this board for an answer but I am still unclear. If the lever is up (spring is uncompressed) the choke is off?

My lever looks like this:

2. Recently my bike has been bogging down and losing power when I try and twist the throttle quickly on 2nd and 3rd gear. I also notice smoke from my exhaust when that happens. I checked my plugs (NGK B7ES) and they are dry, sooty and exhaust has a bit of oil.

raising the slide opens the choke (up-lean)
Lowering the slide closes choke (down-rich)

Most people remove the choke slide altogether....unless it is really cold, a cold motor should be able to run after about 15 seconds....or so I have been told.

OK. Thanks for that info. Good to know that I haven't been running around with the choke on.
