Greetings - and a question

I am new here, this is my first post. Have enjoyed reading all the good info here. I am trying to get my 79 T140E back on the road; it has been in the barn for about 12 years or more. I had thought I'd sell it, but with the gas prices what they are, maybe I can get her going again. The problem seems to be a weak spark, it's the first year (I think) of the Lucas Rita breakerless ignition, everything looks ok, the pickup coil ohms out ok, the coils seem to be ok (at least they will spark about 1/4 inch by just grounding and opening the circuit with a jumper wire. Does anyone know how to test the amp box? Would appreciate your views. Thanks, all, for the advice I have already read here.

Follow the two core cable out of the pick up coil to a pair of connectors behind / beneath the steering head. Pull them apart (they will benefit from a clean up anyway) then use a piece of wire to ground the purple / white wire that goes back to the ignition amplifier, that should spark the plugs.

Thanks, daveforty

I will give it a try. Know where I could get a circuit diagram for the box? The manual has troubleshooting tips, and they are ok, but the cheapest replacement amp I have found is nearly 200 bucks, and I think I can get a Pazon kit for about 150. I know some pretty sharp electronics guys here at work, and I could probably show it to one of them, but they like to see documentation, too. Anyway, thanks much for your idea of something to try.

Cheers,
Tony

If you're getting spark at all, the box is working - they usually either work or they don't. If you've got weak spark, you should be looking at either leads or plugs as the problem. Copper core leads and no-resistor plugs would be the go.

Thanks, OzBloke

I appreciate the info, I'll see what I have lying around as far as HT leads go. If nothing else can be found I will try routing some ordinary clip leads away from grounds. I am using NGK B8ES plugs.
Thanks again,
Tony
