Gents,
Need some help with my 76 Bonnie. Running Amal concentrics (Type 1's). Just stripped and reassembled cyclinders to find dreaded oil leak around exhaust tappet guide block. Fixed the leak, but noticed heavy carbon buildup on R/H piston - running rich?. When I got it back together, I tried to tune the carbs using technique in Haynes. L/H cylinder is fine, but R/H is really rough, and lots of black smoke. Adjustments (fuel/air and throttle stop) don't make any difference on R/H carby. Had to hold throttle open to about 1/3 to get it to run at all. Tried swapping bowls to see if it was float/needle problem - no difference. Jets checked - all OK. Blew out all cavities with compressed air.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
Pete

How's the compression compare between cylinders? If Ok, does the carb slide stick anywhere in the carb, if so, it might be a warped carb body. I replaced both carbs on mine with NEW ones & haven't had a bit of trouble since! Now, a question for U. How'd U fix that exhaust tappet block leak? Did you have to pull the cylinders? I need to do the same thing but want to avoid more work than I have to! Thanks. Al

Tri-Al,
Yep, had to pull cylinders off. Problem was the (new) O-ring wasn't sealing in the cylinder base where the oil feeds the exhaust tappets. Had to use a bit of hi-temp silicone to seal between the o-ring and the flange. Be careful not to get any silcone below the o-ring. Also replaced bottom seal on the push-rod tube, and the o-ring inside the tube while I had it apart. Set yourself up with gaskets before you start - rocker boxes, head, cylinder base, and the seals. Also used a unique method of getting the pistons back in using only two hands (no good getting her indoors to help...). With cylinders off, take circlips out of the outside of the gudgeons, push gudgeons out from the centre till the pistons come off, leaving gudgeons in the outer side of the piston. Put pistons in cylinders, with the gudgeons jutting out. Place cylinders over the crankcase and conrods, line up the gudgeons with the conrods, and slide the gudgeons home. Insert circlips, then push the cylinders down to seat on the casing. Good luck.

Found the problem. The needle & clip had got caught up in the throttle return spring, making it 1/2" higher than it should be. Lesson learned.

Thanks for your responses, guys.

Had the same problem. Finally discovered the tit on the needle plate was resting on the slide boss due to me not fitting it right on reassembly. Tried to put the the slide in with out going to the trouble of removing the tank or brackets and slanting the carb body. Sent me on a goose chase. Haste make waste for sure.
