Question 1973 Tiger petcock replacement gasket?

Does anyone know if replacement gaskets are available for fuel tank petcocks?

I took both petcocks apart to clean and the gaskets shredded when soaked, with the other parts, in acetone. I thought two possible things happened. First, the acetone just ate up the old rubber. Second, the gasket was under pressure from the inner spring of the petcock for over 30 years and it expanded when it soaked up the acetone.

I've ordered replacements, but I would like to rebuild the originals and return them to their home.

Hi 1973Tiger, petcocks have been a problem since unleaded fuel was introduced. It seems to attack the seals where the old 4 star never did, it also attacks fuel pipe too. The only petcocks I know to work have seals made from the same material as plastic fuel tanks. There was a company making these about 4 years ago when I bought a pair (£50) in chrome and they were great.............. unfortunately they no longer make them so you will have to see what you can find.
Just a tip, after 500 miles, remove the fuel pipe and turn on the tap to check you are getting FULL FLOW of gas. Don't forget to catch the gas and pour it back in the tank!!!!!
Roy.
