Strange object under the seat?

What's the electrical thingy just above the coil in the picture below, is it some form of regulator?

It's a solid state bridge rectifier for turning AC into DC - definitely an 'after market' addition for a single phase alternator.

Thanks for that Woolly, but what did it replace? if anything.

p.s. Electrics aint me strong point.

Wooly's spot on. The metal backet also serves as a heat sink, and probably as an earth path as well. Rated at 20 amps, so will easily handle you alternator output (<= 9Amps)

It replaces one of the old style rectifiers, as seen in attached photo.
