Exclamation Spark Plug Question

What is the general opinion of NGK plugs?
I'll tell you why....
My 77 Bonnie was equipped with Champion plugs and decided to put another set in. Crossreferencing the numbers I was able to come up with a set of Champion N5C plugs. Ran fine. Had a local shop do some wiring repair etc. and they put in a set of NGK. While getting the Dual Amals in sync it seemed like the bike was fouling out a plug. Got the carbs set but now it coughs & sputts while at highway speeds.
Anyone with some insight into NGK plugs.... or is it time to go with some Mikuni carbs....
Appreciate the info...

Ngk come stock on the new Triumphs - maybe it's a fueling issue, if your electrics are good!

I have always run my '79 T140E on Champion N5s, never found any others that work as well, irrespective of their 'equivalence'. NGKs are an absolute no no as far as I am concerned.

Presumably yours is a T140V with Mk1 Amals, shouldnt it have N3 sparkplugs?

I believe daveforty is correct.

However I will move this thread to the Vintage forum where there is a bigger pool of view.

Incidentally here's another thread on the same subject:

THANKS!
I was running the N5 because it was a hotter plug. The bike had Open Turn out mufflers on it when I got it & the 5 ran the best. Ive since put slightly Punched out HD Sportster mufflers on it until I get the Factory pipes put back on. I am currently running a Podtronic regulator and the Boyer Micro-Digital ignition & new battery.
I think the NGKs wil soon be gone from my bike.....

Been using ngk - haven't been able to get champions, but never been completely happy with them, don't seem to last well, don't think I should need to keep changing plugs after only 2-3k miles.

77freedom,

I too tried the NGK's (B8E-S) and wasn't happy. Went back to Champion, and tried their N3C plugs (Copper Plus). Not a single issue after 12 months. I run the Boyer MkIII.

I run a T140E and had NGK's and had nothing but fouling problems. Changed to Champion N5C's and no more problems.

I said it before, I'll say it again....all my "spark plug issues" have come to an end once I started useing Autolites! I THINK the cross-reference number is 4052? 5240? Something like that. I WOULD NOT go to Mikuni's ! Amals are fine, even if you have to buy NEW ones or get the old "re-sleeved"!

You should be running either Champion N-3's or NGK B-7's in a '77 T140V. An N-5 is too hot of a plug. If you are fouling N-3's, the bike is running too rich. After checking valves and timing and checking for weak spark, make sure idle circuit is not plugged. Do a search on how to clean this. Adjust idle mixture screws 1 1/2 turns out to start. If still fouling, carb jetting needs to be looked at by doing plug chops. Open pipes should not require a hotter plug. Usually they tend to make the bike run leaner. So if yours is running rich with them, I would expect a carb problem.

Everything will be alright in the end.
If its not alright, its not the end.
