girder front end

I have a 1961 pre unit Bonne in a custom chassis. It has a 40 degree neck rake and incorporates a plunger type rear suspension like the old BSA had. this bike was built by me in 1975 when Triumph choppers were fairly commen. If I had the original frame I would restore it to stock, but it was discarded at the time. The bike was disassembled in 1981 for paint and the girder was stolen but everything else survived. That incident coupled with my divorce bimmed me out and the bike has been in storage since 81.

So much for the history--- I am rebuilding this bike and am looking for a girder for it. They are not very popular now, so I am not doing very well finding one. I remember the girder was 10" over stock. I have located a girder from a Harley that might work but the problem is the length. 10" over stock for a Triumph is not the same as a Harley. I need a frame of reference like how long is a stock front end on a Bonne from that era? I need to convert from inches over stock to an actual measurement. My bike has a 19 inch front wheel, so if someone that has stock bike of this vintage with a 19" wheel on it, and would measure the distance from the bottom of the neck to the axle it would help me a lot.

Cool Girders....

I'm picking up a '70 Bonnie chopper with Girder in Sept when I return from Iraq. I'll have a two week break to ride it before heading to Afghanistan for 6 months. This will be my first Triumph.

While I can't help you with your question of "stock" length... I have a site for you.

Doing the research for this bike I found that it has what appears to be a Durfee girder. http://www.durfees.com/home.php They start at $1795 new.

When I find a job that allows be to be home some... I'll build myself a bobber.

Nice looking chop. What's the writing on the primary?

Stay safe on your tours of duty.

Call BCF Cycle in Kirland, Ohio. Ask for Bradley. He has three or four girder front end leaning on the wall. I'm sure he'd be glad to help. He will also be at Mid Ohio if that helps.

440-256-4149 Should be the number.
