Since the price of gas is soaring, I find a need to use the old 59 for local trips to the store(hee hee hee). I do not have a speedo so I can't keep track of gas mileage. What is typical MPG for the pre unit? Since I am kicking around the idea of replacing the 8 bolt with a nine bolt top end, what would a 500 top end get?

Can't say about a 650, but my 70 T100C was getting 50 mpg in town, that's break in miles too.
4 speed wr tranny, stock gearing

On my '79 750, I get 48 mpg, mix of highway and in-town.

On my '71 500, I get about 50 mpg around town.

On my 650s I have usually done between 50 and 60 miles to the Imperial gallon which is 20 percent larger than the US gallon.
