68 650 Chopper-'Rough Running' Question

Hi. Great forum. I just bought a 68 650 Triumph chopper. I am not a new chopper fan but this thing just exudes coolness. The bike wasn't ran enough and it needs some TLC.
My son cleaned the carb (it was a mess!) and replaced the plugs but the bike still will not run well with the throttle open more than a quarter or so. Does it need to be under load to really check it? it is raining here so we just ran it in the garage. He thinks the points might need adjusted but needs help with that since this is new (old??) to him.
Any of you Triumph vets have any insight to offer? The motor was rebuilt top to bottom in 06. Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated. Jeff

It could be carburation; you really need to soak the metallic parts in Berryman's Chem-Dip for 1/2 hour, then carefully check each passage, and rebuild them very carefully. Tweaking the low speed mix is critical, and replacing main jets, needles and needle jets as a set is the best advice.

It could be ignition timing, or improper adjustment of the points, weak or failing coils and/or condensers. Top-to-bottom careful analysis of all of these is in order.

Careful adjustment of the valves should be done, and clean air filters are a must.

Fully charged battery is a good thing. NEW CHAMPION N3C PLUGS FOR SURE!
