I left my bike for a week, I've been working on restoring a 79 Bonneville since Christmas or so. And I got to the garage and I noticed a pool of oil by the left fork. I checked it out to make sure it didnt come out of the screw at the bottom and Im pretty sure I think it came out of the seal possibly? It had been a week and there was some traces of oil. I pulled the black rubber piece that seperates the upper piece of the fork the lower and it didnt look oil filled. Im kinda at a loss. I guess Im going to have to put more oil in and see if it holds? That brings me to another question what type of oil do I use? And has anyone run into this problem I dont want to buy new forks right now.
If it's not brake fluid, and you've checked the drain screw, the only other place it can leak from is the damper rod screw. To check this, remove the front wheel, and this screw is located in the centre of the semicircular grove that the front axle locates in.

I dont think there was to much oil in there It was real black and dirty looking though. Either that or it got that way from being on the garage floor. I ordered a seal kit. And I havent taken it apart and im hoping the tube is still good. and that the fork hasn't rusted. When I looked at It today there was a large amount of oil around the seal and in the black cap. Im going to re-seal both sides this weekend hopefully and Put the correct amount of oil in aswell.
If it's the seal, you should see a line of oil running down from the top of the fork lower (where the seal is) and dripping on the ground. If you don't then it might be either the drain plug or the bolt that attaches to dampener bolt (you have to remove the front wheel as it's located in the bottom of the fork lower).
Check your brake lines! On the '79, there are, like 400 junctions from the brake lever to the caliper. Not 400, but a few flex to steel line junctures. How's the brake feel? Spongy?
Where are the drips forming? Where is the oil actually falling from the bike?
Yes were talking about the 79 bonne. It didnt come from the damper plug or bolt it came from the seal im al most positive. Today I wiped oil off the back of the lower fork. I forgot to mention that earlier. And the way it was pooled on the ground it would of been closer to the tire if it were the damper bolt. Oh and not to mention I have re built the close to the entire brake system on this bike. The pooling of the oil was off to the left side and behind the fork.
You'll also want to closely inspect the fork tubes, if they pock marked from rust or badly groved, I would consider replacing them. Otherwise, you get the job completed only to fine you've still the leaking fork seals.
